serious scaly leg mte problem

WE have a silkie roo who has scaly leg bad enough to be lame on one foot. We have isolated him and are treating him with petroleum jelly on his legs twice a day. The scale does seem to be going away slowly but his legs seem unusually warm and I am beginning to wonder about infection or is it just extreme inflammation? Should we have him on antibiotics or baby aspirin?

I have never had bad leg mite problems in except one roo raising all my birds.Check you local mill's etc. most carry sulpher powder.Mix about a teaspoon I am thinking into a jar of petroleum jelly and apply a fresh coat every day.Removing the old stuff every couple of days.Its been a good while since I had to do this maybe someone else here has more info but the sulpher worked really well on my roo.It's a bit messy but it does work.I have used it on pot belly pigs for mange which is common in young pot bellies and hot spots for dogs.Just my opinion and have treated many with this.Maybe someone else can chime in.

We mix a concoction of a jar of Vick's vapo rub, and about 1/2ounce of melaluca (try "Mela-Fix" from Wal-mart Fish Department or DR's Fosters and Smiths.com, and a big wad of vaseline and mix !
Then rub it against the grain of his scales so as to press it up under there.
The melaluca will help heal AND kill the bugs.
If his legs are swollen and red, and inflammed maybe you need to see a vet.
I would never give a chicken any human pills, aspirin or otherwise unless a vet tells you it is OK.
Do you have dogs ?
Do you know what liquid permethrin is ?
Like Top Spot or those other liquids you spot on a dog's back to kill fleas and ticks ?
A packet of that mixed in the vapo-rub solution will drop all bugs dead.
Mix it in, and massage as I said, and if it isn't too late, your roo should be fine. It is enough to do ALOT of chickens.
However, it is not an antibiotic.
If the mites have been in there for a while an then dirt gets in and he could get infections, but do not give aspirin.
This is what I do if I get a rescue sick chick...and I also dose all my chickens with this mixture at least once a month, Hope it works for you.
P.S. Melaluca is Tea Tree OIl, a natural insecticide, anti-fungal and anti-biotic, hope it works for you like it does for me.
We even use it for our Koi...(Mela-Fix is almost pure melaluca and is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much cheaper than the stuff for humans in the health food store ) PM me or e-mail if you have Q's, and I wish you the best !

Hello there....I would use petroleum jelly and poultry dust, mixed together. Mix it up good and rub it in--really massage it into her legs.....things will get better. A little duramayacin in the water wouldn't hurt a bit if the skin is very hot.

Hi thanks for all the replies. His legs are not red or swollen, just warm. btw it is ok to give chickens baby aspirin, we have done this before under the advice of a poultry expert and it is fine. He acts ok and is eating and crowing but I wouldn't be surprised if he has a bit of infection. We will bathe his legs today and try some of these remedies and see how he does.

Yes you can give chickens aspirin. I'll attach the info about mixing. 1 baby aspirin (81mg) in a quart of water or Regular (325mg) in a gallon.

Hmmm. A friend just told me Vaseline will hold in body heat, and that is probably why his legs feel warm. We have really been piling on the vaseline, so, I wonder....
