I have NO IDEA of what happened here. 12 week old silkie. I keep her in a pen with 3 more babies her age: 2 sebright and 1 red cochin.

I just went to their pen and found the silkie horribly injured. Here are the pics:

The pics are bad but the bare skull is showing, she bled all the way down her neck and the skin is gone.

This is their pen. I turned it on one side and inspected it all over nut didn't find any blood or any other signs that she got caught or stuck anywhere.

The other 3 chicks are perfectly fine, so I don't think a predator is to blame.

I brought the injured chick in, isolated her, sprayed the wound with vetericyn and placed her under a lamp.

My questions are:

1) can she survive?
2) what do I need to do?
3) what happened??? Did the other chicks attack her?

Thank you very much for your very valuable help.

Yes...chicks will attack and eat other chicks...all it takes is a peck that draws blood. Looks bad, but keep it separate and neosporin on it.... i think it will make it. Silkies are such gentle type chickens i don't keep mine with other types. Good luck :)

Thanks, I hope you're right! I can't believe the chicks attacked her! My silkie is my biggest baby, the other ones are sebrights half her size and a cochin that is smaller too... The missing skin was not hanging or anything like that, it was just GONE.
The silkie seems to be doing OK, at least is drinking water with nutri drench and walking around a little.
Thanks again for your answer, this silkie is a sweetie and I really want her to make it!

Hope your chick is doing better...putting vitamins in the water is good and the neosporin :)
I didn't know that chicks can be so ruthless....i saw this at the grange store just the other day....a group of chicks eating one that was trying to get away...all it takes it that drop of blood. ... i had three bloody chicks in my hand, trying to save them, yelling for the clerk to come do something....they did, but, apparently this happens all the time. I mean i knew they would do that... i just had never seen it. Anyway... good luck with your chick...i wonder if she'll grow her feathers back? i would think so, keep me posted :) Have a good day~

Thank you!!!

She is still hanging there. I cleaned her neck with cotton soaked in hydrogen peroxide and reapplied the neosporin again today. The skin on her neck was loose and looked like a bag, but today it looked more adhered and in place. She is standing at times and drinking water. Gave her some scrambled eggs and regular chick starter. No sign of infection yet, the wound looks gruesome but I'm starting to think she might pull through! I'll keep ya'll posted...

UPDATE: She is making great progress!! She has new skin growing! She is also walking around and perching on the sides of the baskets, flapping her wings, eating and pooping a LOT!!!!!! I AM SO HAPPY, I think she's gonna pull through! I'm moving her to the bigger brooder tomorrow.

Here are some pics (sorry low quality cell phone pics).

New skin at the back and a little on the side:
