SERIOUSLY?? Snow in May???

I live down on the coast in Santa Cruz, and we are forecast snow above 1000' Of course, I live at 1100 ft and have had my chiles and tomatoes in the ground for 2 weeks. My 4 week chicks are also living outside(with a light). Time for floating crop cover and tarps.... I thought we were done with this. Global weather extremes will become the norm.. Remember folks, it is not only global WARMING we are dealing with. As the chinese proverb goes: "May you live in interesting times." We certainly do. Good luck with the weather to all.

HHandbasket, you're going to find a lot of differences with that change in elevation. Sorry you got sucker punched with snow though, but as you said, it IS pretty. I'm learning with my house (just moved in last summer) where the hot spots in the yard are and that what I used to grow in full sun now wilts. My squash and cucumbers are a wilted mess, and the only thing that's really thriving right now are the tomato plants and corn. And the sunflowers and some other flowering plants that I knew could take it. So next Spring I'll have to rethink my veggie garden area.

How are you doing in your new place? It was a thrill to read your thread when you were getting it. Brought back the excitement of when I got mine. Do you have "projects" going and planned? How's the plans for the chicken coop?

I am sooo sorry!

It is all my fault. My guy has been busy cleaning up the ranch in WA and has had freezing over night temps, rain, hail or snow pretty much every day since he has been back.

On the other hand, we have been busy with the garden, adding sod, planting flowers etc and really would love some rain a bit south of you in Santa Barbara.

So I asked him to send me some rain, sounds like he hid some snow in the clouds and it got dropped off at your place.

One of my photo buddies took her new SUV out for a first trip camping in Yosemite last night. Wonder how she liked the dusting of snow this morning.............

Yes, I do love the prettiness of it. At least it's pretty easy to keep the majority of our place warm inside when it's snowing.

The chickens were HILARIOUS when I opened the coop door! Everyone was gathered at the door, waiting to get out. Juanita, the barred rock, stuck her head out, looked around, and I SWEAR you could hear "What the he__??" come out of her beak! She stepped out, and you could almost hear her say, "Oh, NO way!", then turned around and went right back inside!

She and 2 other are out checking out the snow now, though. There's a little chicken-feet path from the snow down to one of the other open-air coops where they like to hang out during the day. They are just funny to watch.

Rico's still in the coop, crowing his li'l heart out. I know I keep saying it, but he is a good rooster & I'm so glad we have him.

Snow's starting to melt, so we're going to release the tweenagers and see how they do.

Gotta go meet up with Linda/gryeyes. She's having the final walk-through with her real estate agent in about 10 minutes & we're supposed to meet her up there!

BTW, we *just* moved up here, too. It was last month when gryeyes came to visit us for the first time that she fell in love with the area and decided to start looking at homes up here. She got in with a good agent, and I also looked around and helped find her some good places. According to the odometer in the car, she'll be between 4.1 and 4.2 miles from us when she moves.

It's hard not to fall in love with this area. Seriously. Even though I'm whining about the snow, it's mostly because it interfered with the plans I had on my day off. Nonetheless, this has turned out to be a really good day. Got to have a good visit with a great friend, got to see pretty snow on the ground and laugh while my silly chickens went out frolicking in the snow, which was pretty funny to watch, especially the silkies & the cochin with their little "fuzzy pants" and the d'uccles with their feathers that stick straight out like little knife blades coming off their ankles! They were SO funny to watch. All the hens eventually came out and gathered underneath the coop. No doubt I'll find some eggs down there tomorrow, when I can really get down on the ground and look.

Ooooh, so YOU just moved there recently too? Congratulations to you too! For some reason after reading her thread on the house, in my excitement for her I got your names mixed up,

lol. I remembered that the two names went together in friendship though. Thanks for the clarification. Did you know each other before BYC or become friends after? Just curious because this place is like a forum mansion!

I've lived in Montana pretty much my whole life. I have been snowed on at some point every month except August.

It snowed here a couple years ago on June 8th. That was a real blast.
