Seriously Worried About Ducks

I have 9 ducks, 4 cayugas, a Welsh harlequin, 3 Swedish blues and a perking. They're less than a yr old still but full grown. They share a pen with 7 geese, one with is a youngling. They all share a communal kiddie pool for water, becuase I needed something low for the ducks to drink out of but the geese and the ducks always get in it and make it dirty. I try to dump it out once a week but it's become a struggle and I'm not sure what to change it to to give them water.

Everything has been fine for months until I noticed my Welsh hedwig(not actually sure what gender is) not running over as fast as the others for food. She has always been a slower one so I though nothing of it, until she wasn't eating the food as like quickly as she used to. Again she has always eaten her food a bit slower since she was a baby but not this slow. I panicked talked to a friend that owns ducks who told me to change out the water more so I did. Then my Perkin Percy was acting strange, not running over and eating slow now he is a BIG boy and he has always without fail been the one to gobble up food fast. That freaked me out, but Hedwig was back to her normal self, still walking slow behind the other's but eating better.

I called my friend again who said they might have eggs which is why they're walking slower and a bit more waddly but to watch them. So I have been, I've been feeding those two away from the other's to make sure they get more food. Now today I noticed she was laying down away from the group, a few of them including Percy and hedwig have been off in another area recently laying down. She got up to rush over for food but was super freaking weird like she kept dragging her wing a little or it was sticking out. I. Freaked. Out. I thought something attacked her, I gave them their food fast and rushed inside to call my friend. Came out and she's eating normal again, and the wing looks fine! At this point I think I'm crazy, I noticed though that the part on her back like under her wings, like her rump area looks strange like something has been pecking her or something like it looks ruffled. She let's me pick her up, pet her, examine her profusely for blood but she's fine.

The possibility that something got in and messed with her is a thing. But between 7 terrifying geese, an alpaca, 2 dogs and a cat that guards them, there would be alot more commotion. They sleep under a light on the side of the pen close to my room so I listen out all night for anything. I've heard nothing all night. I have considered maybe the drakes over breeding, idk how many I have but I'm guessing more boys since they were straight run. But her neck is completely fine, not a feather missing and the other ducks haven't done anything when I'm outside watching them.

I'm really worried, she goes from being perfectly fine to suddenly looking hurt or unwell but literally within minutes she is fine.

How big is your pen? That is a lot of ducks and geese being penned together. Do you notice the geese picking on the ducks or the ducks picking on the geese? Have a gosling in with ducks to me sounds risky geese are so protective and will pretty much attack anything they perceive as a threat to their young. Maybe some one is picking on your Welsh and now your Pekin Percy acting off. If your not able to spend time watching them to see if someone is getting bullied maybe putting up a camera would help. Also did you look at hedwigs bottom real good to make sure what you might have seen was a prolapse? Just tossing out some questions to see if we can come up with what’s going on.

Their pen is large, like the length of at least 4 45ft trailers-it was originally created to hold 4 to 5 horses to give you an idea of just how big it is.

We had them out of there when the gosling was super small but it's bigger than them now and leaves them alone. Plus the size of their pen is so large the two flocks keep to their own on complete opposite sides. The geese I've noticed pick at them when it's meal time, but once the food has been spread out they leave them alone and eat in peace together.

I did not check her bottom, that never crossed my mind I'll try and check it out later and see if it looks off.

Bed news. I woke up this morning to find hedwig dead. She was looking much better the past day but suddenly she's dead. I found her laying completely on her back, legs stretched up. No wounds on her, not a scratch and I can see no signs of an animal getting in. I'm extremely saddened by this as she was one of the 8 ducks I hand raised. I have no clue what happened to her, she was looking better.

Can you upload some photos of your pen and ducks and geese?

I’m so so so sorry to hear that you are having some trouble. :hugs

I've added a picture of how I found her in case anyone can give me insight. After checking her over I'm going to give her a proper burial.

I have noticed recently the geese seem to be picking on certain ducks more and even each other. I thought it was a hunger thing so I started feeding them alot more. But I'm thinking...of they're somehow to cause of Hedwig's death...i might have to rehome them as much as it pains me I'm scared to loose any more ducks.

My geese were always a bit sassy and rude but they never attacked the ducks. They would bite them once if they came close while eating but after that they left them alone. The guy we got them from even kept them living with his ducks for years before we took them. So the sudden aggression worries me and makes me sad. I just got them to really like me, they don't even hiss at me all that much anymore. But this...i don't know what to do.

Their pen is really large, although I can't post photos right now. I was originally built for 5 horses we owned before they moved to a pasture. Width wise is the length of a semi, cab and all. And length wise it's at least 2 semis long. I made sure they had an insane amount of room to roam and give each other space.
