Served notice - making us take our children's pets away?

There are wild chickens residing in Florida and Kauai. And in both those cases it relates to domestic chickens who were abandoned or became loose, and created feral flocks. In Kauai they "became loose" as a result of a hurricane. Not sure about Florida.

In both cases feral is a more apt term than wild. I believe that the jungle fowl are the only truly wild type of gallus.

I did not know that ... But after thinking on it for a half second ... lol
They are not native animals to the USA? So I wonder how they would classify them now?
Food for thought now!

Point out to them that raising backyard chickens costs more than buying eggs. If it doesn't even save you any money, I doubt that they could be considered "utility". But they are kept for pleasure. Therefore, they are pets!

Good Luck!

Not to long ago a guy in a town by me had the town code change to allow chickens. It took some time but it can happen. Don't give up and good luck

I find it interesting that the first listing under Frequently Asked Questions pertained to chickens. Apparently there are quite a few folks in your town who have asked about owning chickens. You may have good luck getting signatures on a petition if it comes to that, or just some other families to back you up at your town council meeting. I was lucky that our Village President thought changing our ordinance was a good idea. Hopefully you will find someone who thinks the same way. Good Luck!!

Hi Sonoran! Sorry to hear about your story. We are going through the same thing. Read the city code, there were no prohibitions on chickens, only code stating that owners of domestic fowl can't allow them to roam onto others' property. So we got chicks in March and have loved them ever since! They started laying a couple weeks ago, and now we get served notice that the city received a "public complaint," about our chickens. They are giving us until 9/9 to get rid of them.
