Served notice - making us take our children's pets away?

I am so sick of hearing these things! What is wrong with people? Chickens are great pets. I am glad your gonna fight this. I suggest having your children in court crying , holding their chickens~
People piss me off~

Oh, and i am sure the neighbor never came to you. Propally some hate monger, seems to be many in this world~

Can you email the chicken whisper guy? I hear he helps write letters and such.

best of luck,
Heather

I think you have me mixed up with the OP or someone else. My birds are, and always have been quite legal, both with the city and the HOA. I have posted a couple of times on this thread.

If your chickens are legal on your property, the city has no jurisdiction in telling you to get rid of them. If you are letting them off your property, you are indeed in violation and could be fined, the birds, if caught off your property could probably be impounded. But if you keep them in your yard, then you should be in the clear.

You need to challenge the citation. Just because someone complains doesn't mean there are legal grounds for action. Depending on the specific complaint, there may be some nuisance code that you've violated, but that would be a fine.

So sorry, Sonoran...I meant Rodeo Ranger.

Yeah, my chickens are kept in their chicken run and are never let out unless we are there to watch them and keep them in the garden area (we let them go there to eat bugs and enjoy the space.) So they have NEVER been on anyone else's property. Ever.

The neighbor who complained is a complainer. She complains about other people's trees, a horse my neighbor had, my kids playing too close to "her" fence, my house (which someone built YEARS before we bought it) blocking her view of the mountain behind me. You get the idea.

We have worked out a deal with the city. They back off on the date given to us to get rid of the chickens, and then we can try and convince our neighbor to like the chickens, or at least to not complain to the city about them again! The council is looking at the issue of chickens, since I guess we aren't the first to bring it up. A couple of council members have supposedly been "dragged in" to helping others who want to keep their chickens. So this is where we stand right now.

Any ideas out there on winning over a difficult neighbor?

Well, what has she said she wants? (In all the issues complained about, not just the chickens?) That might give you some perspective if you can find any common denominators. It could be as simple as that is the only way she knows to get attention, or it could be that she is the kind of person who only accepts on way (hers) of doing EVERYthing. Maybe she wants to be left alone, or maybe she really wants to make friends (kind of like the child who gets attention from his parents only by misbehaving). She may have some sort of mental or emotional problems.

Anyways, the better insight you can get into her reasons, the more you should be able to figure out how to improve the situation. Good luck!

So Sorry you have to go though this. I know how it feels. My son hatched his polish chickens and we got two (1 roo and 1 hen). Unfortunalely we are not allowed to have roosters, hens are ok and we live in the city.

We decided to risk it and see if anyone complained. For 7 mos. we had our chickens without complaint. All of our neighbors directly around our house loved them and didn't mind the crowing. No one was getting woke up or anything. Anyway, we ended up getting a letter in the mail from the board of health with an attached nuisance law from the 1800's. Just below the noise nuisance law was another law that if we needed to slaughter our horse, we needed to do it in the basement. Go figure!

We ended up moving them to my wonderful sister in law and brother in law's house and we share custody. I hope you find a solution! Good luck!!

p.s. the complainer was a neighbor down the street that had dogs louder than our roo.
