Set 8 Eggs In Brinsea Mini Advance Today 9/13/11. Wanna Join?

I also have a Brinsea mini advanced (like it very much by the way). My first attempt involved eggs from my MF Cochin bantams; in the first set of six, five hatched; second batch all six I had placed in the incubator hatched. The hen whom I suspected laid all these eggs stopped laying during the heat of the summer and is currently going through a molt.

Trying this with six MF shipped eggs, three hatched; two were like yours; fully formed but late deaths; the third died earlier into the incubation. Second try with 10 MF shipped eggs (a different seller) all were infertile so I am unsure if something happened during the shipping (?perhaps being x-rayed?).

Shipped eggs are a gamble and financially, the success rate is likely greater using your own eggs, buying fertile eggs locally or buying chicks. Still, there's that incredible excitement waiting and watching for these eggs to hatch.

CSisley- Congrats! Cute chicks. Will the three you hatched be your favorites or will you love them all the same?

Wasn't it you that started this forum? It has been lots of fun hatching out with ye all, thanks.
What breeds are the 15 you got in the post?

None of my eggs hatched. None of them developed at all... I would have had as much success hatching eggs from the supermarket. They looked like market eggs when I cracked them open. Must have not been fertile/scrambled in shipping. Alas... No Wheaten Ameraucanas for me this season. I may pick up chicks from the breeder in the spring though.

However I will not be swayed on my quest to hatch my first egg! I have ordered a dozen+ TURKEN eggs from BYC member Soggy Bottom Farm. Something will hatch... I believe! Turkens are so goofy looking. I like them a lot.

CSisley, congratulations on your hatch! Your chicks are adorable.

cielo- Sorry to here that! That's a shame. Don't be disheartened. My first attempt at hatching went the same way so I know the feeling.
I had some eggs that were no good. The candler helped a lot this time because I could see exactly what was going on in the eggs(egg).
Best of luck with the Turkens, they'll be fun. And your spring chicks. Cheers henmad

Thanks henmad! I'm excited about potential Turkens. They are so goofy looking! I'll also incubate a dozen White Leghorn eggs so out of 24+ eggs something is bound to hatch. Granted they will all be shipped but... if others can do it, I can! I ordered a new thermostat wafer so I am optimistic!

Gail - Thank you so much for your input. For my next hatch, possibly in the Spring, I’ll see if I can’t get some local fertile eggs that haven’t been shipped. I’ll be curious to see the difference.

Cielo – Sorry to hear about your hatch. I hope you have better results next time, perhaps you’re a casualty of shipped eggs too…

Henmad – The breeds I got from the post include: 3 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Speckled Sussex, 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 1 Golden Laced Wyandotte, 1 Buff Brahma Bantam, 1
Columbian Wyandotte, 1 Light Brahma, 1 Golden Laced Polish, 1 White Crested Polish, 1 Partridge Cochin, 1 Easter Egger and 1 Mille Fleur d'Uccle Bantam but she didn’t make it through the first night:( My favorite chicks are always the ones that have the most tame and friendly personalities. The three I hatched seem to be very tame especially the Swedish Flower but some of the ones that were shipped are just as tame.

The Golden Laced Polish – I’m thinking of calling her Coco

The Partridge Cochin named Polie, and the Swedish Flower which will be named either Worthers or Carmella depending on whether it’s a he or a she.

CSisley- Didn't see your post until now. Your chicks must be getting big now. Some of my favorite breeds!!! Funny you have a Wyandotte in the mix too. I was just looking up some info about them as I think it might make a good choice to add to ours. Whats your favorites now of the lot you have. I like the friendly ones the best also. Which are the friendliest of yours? One of the Silkie Pekin cross chicks we got is really friendly. She hops up on your knee if she gets any chance at all.

Hello Henmad,

I've been very pleased with this batch of chicks, one of the best I've had thus far but I'll give you a rundown of what I've observed. I will put stars next to the ones I especially like.
3 Buff Orps* - they are very docile and curious, not easily startled. They don't make a point to be picked up but they don't seem to mind it either. If I pick one of them up and set them on my knee combined with petting, they don't try to jump back in with the others but will sit quietly. I love their golden color but I can’t yet tell them apart!
2 Speckled Sussex* - these are very similar to the buff orps but one out of the two seems to especially like to fly up where she can be petted or see what's going on. They are also very pretty.
1 Easter Egger* - This one likes to fly and she seems to be a little more alert and startles just a little quicker than the buffs and the sussex but she does like to be petted and will settle on my knee when asked. I was pleased with her look too. She has puffy cheeks and is sort of a buff color like the orps.
Golden Laced Wyandotte- docile, curious, slightly more alert, similar to the easter egger. Her coloring is coming in quite nicely for being a hatchery chick.
Silver Laced Wyandotte* - Especially bold and curious. She likes to fly up to where I am to investigate what's going on. Her coloring is pretty but is a bit muttled so far.
2 Blue Laced Red Wyandottes* - Very docile and curious and will settle on my knee while being petted. Their coloring is especially beautiful and even with an untrained eye I can tell they are not hatchery chicks.
1 Columbian Wyandotte - She's a bit timid and is likely at the bottom of the pecking order. She will settle while being petted but it takes a little bit of convincing. I think she will be pretty as an adult but she's feathering out extremely slow compared to the others.
Swedish flower* - Not easily startled but also very alert and likes to fly up to investigate what I'm doing. She/He is the only one I've observed being actively aggressive towards the others but still remains a favorite because she's so tame and likes to be petted. I'm pretty sure she(i think) is the highest on the pecking order. Her coloring is also especially beautiful and unique.
1 light brahma - She's very docile and none aggressive but is a bit timid. She's ok with being petted while with the others but gets a bit upset if I take her out of the cage even if she can see the others. Her color is very pretty but doesn't seem to follow the breed standard. I just love her large stately size/figure and fluffy feet.
1 partridge cochin* - She's also very docile and none aggressive and has overcome some of the timidness I observed when she was younger. She's a bit nervous about being caught but will settle contently on my knee while being petted unlike the light brahma. She's cute more than pretty with her very round figure and fluffy feet.
1 buff brahma bantam - She's a piece of work! I expected her to be docile but she's not. I would describe her as feisty. I named her piglet because she sort of makes this squeel/grunt when I pick her up and will sometimes peck at my hand when I go to scoop her up as if to say "hands off I tell you, hands off!" Of course I ignore her protests and do it anyway and she'll endure being petted but will look for the first opportunity to get away. She seems to be more indignant than afraid at my attempts at being nice. She is however, very pretty and cute. Even my Mom, who doesn't love chickens as I do, made a comment about her prettiness. Even so it is unlikely I will get this breed again. I think it's the bantam gene that gives her the feistiness and I will likely try for a regular buff brahma next time.
2 Polishess(golden laced and white crested) - They are a bit flighty and get nervous when being picked up. Sometimes I can convince them to settle while being petted but they don't take to it easily. The golden laced has an extreme muttled coloring which I hopes gets better with age. The white crested is much more refined/sleek looking than the golden laced. They are pretty in their own way but still look so silly with their feathery heads. It is unlikely I will get this breed again due to personality.

I hope this helps! If you are looking at Wyandottes I would definitely recommend them for personality and look.

Hi CSisley. Your findings are very like what I have found with some of the breeds you mentioned so your recommendation
of Wyandotte's must be spot on. Sounds like it could be a really good pick.
Thanks a Million henmad
