Set eggs 3/5. Looking for others to hatch with!

I want to candle the eggs so bad. But I don't think Buffy would like me digging around under her at night. At what point do I need give up on an egg hatching if I don't candle them? I stuck 3 under Buffy about 14 hours after the main batch. Also I am not incubating my own eggs. Maybe next year I will. But I found a local guy who hatches and puts it on a web cam. He hatches every weekend. Looks like this weekend is cochins. The kids love to watch them hatch and I don't have to worry about them opening the incubator.

I don't think you have to wait until night, if you don't want to. I got my eggs out from under two broodies this morning and brought them inside and went downstairs to a dark room and candled and made marks on them and took them back out and put them under the right hen. If you don't have a dark room, then night makes sense. Just gently reach under her and get them out. She'll just throw a little fuss, but she'll be all right. I think as far as giving up, I have waited up to a week past hatch day back when I didn't know what I was looking for. I didn't have any bad experiences with egg bombs!

I agree, sneak in a new incubator! I don't have cochins, but am very interested in them. I gladly admit I have a thing for fluffy, small chickens. I do the silkies right now and am trying to stay focused on buying breeders and getting a very nice flock going, but I get sidetracked along the way while I'm looking. I am hoping to get some bantam buff brahma eggs this weekend and some lavander Ameraucana eggs or chicks too and I think eventually cochins would go perfect with these three!!! I do also have some Seramas around here that I sort of lucked into and they are really cute, but I had wanted to sell them and my husband said no......I watch the auctions and have been learning about the cochins and sometimes see you putting bids in and just thought of you when I saw this new one come up this morning and wondered if you would be bidding there. What do you look for in a good quality cochin?

Ok, it's official! I have about 3 1/2 dozen eggs coming by Wednesday! I'm insane! This is crazy! We will see how many hatch.
I am not sure how many that I currently have in the bator are developing. I have to candle tonight again on day eight last night I cnadled and didnt see anything but will check again tonight to make sure. It will be ok if the the eggs from my girls dont develop cause I really want the ones on their way.
I hope they all arrive safely!

Do you trim your cochins? I have read they can have a hard time due to all that fluffiness. My last silkie had zero fertility and I'm hoping it's because her cushion is so big. All the other girls have been 100%. I will be sad if there is just a problem and she can't make a baby because she is very pretty. I have a girl that looks almost exactly like her, but a little lighter and she makes very cute chickies. Right now this girl is being broody on top of a toolbox (with no eggs under her). When she's finished I am going to trim her feathers in the back and see if that works.

I tried to candle last night. My broody didn't much care for it. But she was a sweet heart. The problem is the shells are so thick and dark I couldn't see anything. chocolate eggs and green eggs it seems a bit of a challenge. I will get a stronger led and try again.

I finally got to candling last nite...threw away 2, have one that is iffy. Still leaves me with 32. I have 16 from the last batch in the brooder now! (hubby is not too sure about chickies in the livingroom though)

I'm with you guys. I have baby chicks in a guest bedroom downstairs, three week old chicks and a momma with four chicks in pens in my laundry room and three roos and one hen and 10 older chicks in the garage! Then all my regular guys are in his barn because we don't have the coop built. I have eggs in the bator, eggs under broodies and eggs on the way.
