Set eggs 3/5. Looking for others to hatch with!

I did make this bator from one of those red $18 igloo coolers from Walmart. The baskets are for breed ID, since it is the first hatch ever from the new coop, I want to make sure I know what the babies look like. I also went to the crafty section at Wamart and got the colored Velcro (the kind that sticks to itself ) so I can band their legs when it is time to transfer to the brooder. I cut them in half long ways then made little 1.5" long strips. I think I am ready to go.

I confess, I HAD to candle the silkie eggs again. The suspense of wondering if they were ALL clears or if I was losing my ability to see embryos was driving me loony!

Day 5 CANDLING RESULTS:
I started with a different set of eggs marked C8. There are 9 eggs that say C8 and ALL 9 are developing!

Next, I checked the eggs marked C6. There are only 3 eggs from the C6 pen and ALL 3 are developing!!!

Lastly, I re-checked the C2 eggs...again. There are 11 C2 eggs and only 1 has an embryo/veining.

The other 10 still seem CLEAR!

That is a total of 13 developing eggs out of 24 original eggs. (One had cracks all over the shell and 10 appear infertile)

I kept all the eggs in the bator for now, but when I candle around Day 10 I'd like to remove any that still appear clear. Not too bad, but it bums me out since the breeder said the pens all had high fertility. I did send her an e-mail last night to report the results of the 3 pens. She is a nice lady so maybe she'll give me a different set of eggs in the future to make up for the C2 pen. My DH doesn't want me to hatch any more chicks after these, so if she offers I think I'll ask her if I could get them at a later date, like 5 or 6 months from now.

I didn't re-candle the EE eggs. Today is Day 13 for them and I just want to leave them alone. They go into lockdown in 5 days.

Yeah, my DH seems to think this will be the only hatch I do, LOL. It is way to addictive. He should be happy, between me making dolls and baby chicks it distracts me from thinking about that one more baby I want

I said I would update on my hatch, so here goes.

The ducklings and chicks have not hatched yet (it is day 23 for the duck eggs and day 16 for the chicken eggs). I just wanted to say what's going on inside the eggs.

I now have 9 duck eggs and 16 chicken eggs left (before I had 12 duck eggs and 18 chicken eggs). On day 11 (for the duck eggs), I found that I had a twin egg. For several days, I could not tell if even one of them was alive. A few days ago, I tried candling them on the bottom and found that both were still alive. (I candled them a few hours ago and both are looking good). I'm so exited, lockdown is in two days. We'll see how it goes! :D

Just to share that I had a twin egg :D

I have never seen a twin egg. That is so neat! Good luck, it seems with two trying to get out, they should make quick work out of it.

Here is my update. I started with 30 chicken eggs and have lost 5 of them. I will candle again this evening when I get home from work and put them in lockdown. I have had humidity problems so I am a bit concerned about that aspect. Hope for the best. I have goose eggs in another incubator and some of them are due next weekend.. Just not holding my breath. They dont look right. The air cell is way to small.. Raise or lower humidity???? I can never remember.. Thanks

Lower the humidity to make the air cell bigger. They would need to lose more moisture. If they are too big, you raise it. Good luck. When is lockdown? I think mine might be a bit too big, but lockdown is tomorrow and I just started thinking this a few days ago so probably not too much I can do at this point. I have lowered the H since then so hoping for the best.

Good luck on the twins. I know it can be done. Someone on here had a thread recently for twins. It is very interesting. Can you imagine getting two chicks from one shell!
