Set eggs 5-12 Looking for hatching buddies

I sure didn't. Maybe we can merge? I am no expert but gather that any hatch can vary by two or three days either way just like a pregnancy varies.

Welcome to BYC by the way. I would guess that Washington would be even worse than Arkansas on trying to keep humidity low enough!

Merging sounds great! I really like having fellow chicken and other egg hatchers, It makes it even more fun! I wish I had found this site earlier! Might have had a better hatch % rate, because I would have learned things! Like lock down...didn't know about it so I think I shrink wrapped a few! I have had more trouble with keeping the humidity high enough! The bator is in the house...so maybe that's why. This is like an addiction! So exciting when they start to hatch!

I might be too late to join this hatch but i would love to join.
its my First hatch ever.

My eggs are due to come today but so far havent shown up.(BOO)

I wanted to cut my odds of total failure down so i bought the Hovabator with the fan and hydrometer? for temp and humidity and egg turner.
It all seems pretty tricky to me
I have had the bator & fan going for 4 daysand the temp changes every hour and only for a short period was 99.5.The humidity rarely is 40 (isnt it supposed to be 40?).Either too high or too low. Was told not to change the setting any more often than once every 8 hours as i was fiddling every hour..

About opening the bator ...A trick from the lady i bought the eggs from for the styrofoam bators. Put a hole in it as big as a straw hole and stick a straw in it.
(She used iv tubing) then I clamped it shut with a pinch type clothes pin when not needed I Added water with a large puppy feedling syringe so dont have to open the bator for humity ajustment

Now lets just see how the eggs like it if they ever get here !!

HOPE to JOIN!!!
Welcome. Never too late. You might check to make sure your lid is fitting tightly. My house doesn't have central air so I am the same humidity as outside or higher. :) Hopefully your eggs will come soon.

I also set my eggs on the 12th! I set 24 silkie eggs (up to 9 different colors, from ebay "mintujenkins") and 9 bantam cochin eggs (Lucky Pickens Farm, ebay "luckypickens"). The silkie eggs I set at 1 am, and 10 pm for the cochin eggs since they arrived a day later than I thought they would. I let the silkie eggs settle over 24 hours after shipping, and the cochin eggs settle for about 12 hours. I will probably be candling for the first time tonight, or tomorrow night. I just purchased this flashlight to candle, and hope it works well: http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-Ultra...C2WO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1337279097&sr=8-2 It shows the veins in my fingers and hand, so I think it can handle the brown eggs. Looking forward to sharing what I do, and learning from you guys! Until now, the only thing I have hatched in an incubator are call duck eggs, so hoping this will be easier! I just got the Hovabator Genesis from Cutler Poultry and it seems to be working great so far. I ordered on a Thursday, and it got delivered Monday, but I live about 190 miles away from them so not far.

Welcome! This is my first hatch too! I've read a lot of good things about dry incubation, so that is the method I am using.

Candled earlier this afternoon and saw 11 good eggs. The 12th one i had been keeping an eye on becuase the veins inside looked off to me, and there was no movement of the embryo in this egg, while in some eggs, there was so much movement, it looked like the chick was playing jump rope with a blood vessel.

(i know, it sounds gross, but honestly, that's how it looked! All you first timers will see what i mean soon enough!) Anyway, today, the blood vessels had retreated and left a large black blob in the egg. I know it's gone, but i just don't feel up to tossing the egg. Now i spotted another egg that looks similar....i hope my clutch doesn't just die off on me!!! It might have something to do with my method of disinfecting the incubator! I wiped it down with lysol disinfecting wipes and then never rinsed it out! The lysol stuff might be affecting my hatch! Oh, i hope not!!!

Has anyone ever disinfected an incubator with lysol wipes before? And not rinsed it out afterwards?

what is the ideal temp and hum. i tried one egg and got to about the 18th day before it died. im fixing to put another in my bator?

I candled my 33 eggs yesterday. With that many to candle, I was just looking to see which had not started developing. It looks like only 2/24 silkie eggs were infertile, and 4/9 bantam cochin eggs so I am down to 27 eggs now. The next time I candle I'll pay closer attention to the ones with veining.

So sorry.

Fingers crossed that isn't the problem.

Has anyone tried putting the rubber shelft liners (ones with holes for ventilation) on the wire at lockdown to keep the wire and underside of incubator cleaner on the styrofoam type? I was wondering if something like that would give easier cleanup and better leg support for the chicks. Thoughts?

Why not just some Viva paper towel at lockdown that you can throw away when it is all done? Seems like it would be a cheap and effective solution. Or would it be too slippery?

The Genesis I just bought has a plastic insert that goes in the bottom with separate areas for water. It seems like I will barely need to clean the styrofoam part now.
