Wholewheatchicken these are a mix of (6)black austrolorp,(5) rhode island red, (7)new hampshires(6) delaware and I have 2 barred rock hens and 3 EE hens. I put in 6 ee eggs. I have one New hampshire roo, 1 Black austrolorp roo and 2 EE roos and one has the blue egg laying gene due to his comb size.

Their color is very pretty. I would love to see what they look like when they grow up.
What do you mean by your roo has the egg laying gene due to his comb size?
Are your EEs bantams or LF? I have four bantam EEs and I love them. Their color is really neat and they are the sweetest things. They are about two months and I can tell I for sure have one boy and two girls and I'm thinking the fourth is a pullet also. I'm hoping as I don't think I could rehome one of them. I have real Ameraucanas and they are turning out to be just as nice also. They are only a month old.

I use the egg crates too. I've done it both ways and for me egg crates win it hands down.
How many did you put in and is Monday official hatch day?
I put some into lockdown and Saturday is the day. I only have one successful hatch under my belt so I'm nervous.........
I haven't paid any attention to these eggs and now tonight I am so impatient it hurts, LOL!
Good luck on this hatch. I hope they all pop out for you!

Wholewheatchicken I just sent you a pm and I have LF's not bantam's. We will be culling two roos this weekend, they chase and go after my 4 year old. I won't cull my one EE with the blue egg gene Here is 'Mo'

I have a pip. It's on a porcelain silkie egg. I'm so excited as this is the color I really wanted and I had seven or nine to begin with and only ended up with three to make it to lockdown. Hopefully it is a little girl!!! (I need them all to be girls...I bought these eggs to make girlfriends for two roos...and I have buff still cooking in the incubator!) I think I have seven lavendars and the rest are BBS silkies and my Ameraucanas.....I hope the Ams do okay. I have four chicks waiting for some friends out of these eggs.

Pls forgive my question..... But what is the advantage to the egg cartons? I'm assuming that it keeps the other chicks from knocking them around?
Thanks for the info, always something to learn here!

This is my understanding of the benefit. It keep the newly hatched chicks from kicking around the ones that have yet to hatch therefore the ones that are trying to hatch expend less energy to get out of the shell and reduces mortality. It did contain some of the mess too so there wasn't as much gunk to clean out of the incubator. I don't know if it helps the chick position correctly for hatching better? I tried it on my last hatch for the first time and love it. If you only had a few hatching, I don't think it would maybe be as big of a deal...I don't know....but to have several in there I think it makes a big difference. And the chicks really do crawl back in the egg section of the crate and sit in it. It was very comical. And....it gave chicks a place to go if they wanted to lay down and rest that was more safe, it seemed like.
