Set eggs today, 2/6/10. Who's with me?

Just saw this post. Have been posting in the Feb Hatch-Along, Come Join In thread. Just finished one hatch but started 26 B-Ameracaunas, 14 experimental "store-bought" LF and 2 LF eggs for a friend on the 5th.

I candled yesterday. Threw out 5 of the 6 sussex eggs as clear, the other one is *probably* a blood ring but I will give another few days just in case... the sussexes only *just* started back into laying and some of these are pullet eggs, so, that's not too surprising.

All but one of the Red Star cross eggs look good; and I evidently need to replace my flashlight batteries because most of the EE cross eggs I'll be darned if I can tell what I'm seeing other than "not clear"

Incubator (homemade, version 1.3) is holding *beautifully* for a change -- +/1 0.2 F, woo hoo, and recovering very rapidly after being opened for turning -- so I am *hopeful* I will get at least 10 of these things to hatch out, which I figure is about the minimum I need for my neighbor to have a reasonable shot at 4 pullets.

Good luck to all,

Pat

I candled today (day 10) and saw movement in almost all of them (19 eggs total - 7 pure ameraucana - 11 easter eggers & 1 golden cuckoo marans). It was very exciting. I have a good candler this time and saw much more detail than I did the last time we hatched eggs from our broody (also the first time I hatched any eggs).

There were some eggs that were pretty dark - I didn't see movement, but did see plenty of veins and they had a large amount of dark area. I have one egg that is pretty iffy - I know it started to develop, there are a few veins, but not like the rest and there is less dark area than the rest. It is a huge Cuckoo Marans egg (my only marans egg). I think it may have died earlier, but since I don't see a bloodring I will wait and candle it again in a few days.

I had started with 22 eggs - 2 were clear and I took one out at day 7 because it had a definite blood ring - broke it open and didn't see anything inside but the blood ring on the shell.

I candled today too and I saw movement in all eggs. Using the Brinsea Eco with 8 eggs from my BR rooster-6 months old and pullets-RIR and Comets. It's a bit difficult seeing the veins in the darker eggs so I looked for the heart?.....black dot....and saw it moving in all the eggs. Yipeee!!

Pat sorry you had clear eggs. I did take your advice and got a LED flashlight and it's much better than the cardboard tube I was using.

Good luck everyone!

I candled mine and out of 10 eggs 9 were fertile. I hope it goes this well for the rest of the days to come. I am so anxious......I want chickies!!!!

Oh PHOOOEY!

I just couldn't resist candling a couple again (at night, hoping that the pitch-black basement would let me see better into the darker eggs), and not only did I drop one and crack it, when I then broke it open to show to the kids (since it was obviously doomed, being seriously cracked) the embryo had died and some decomposition had started to set in

Darnit! Now I am all worried about the others. Many of the eggs are just too dark for me to see clearly whether there is any movement, whether the embryo and veining are still distinct, etc. So not only do I not know if it has other dead companions in there, I am going to spend the next 2 weeks worrying about the very real chance of something exploding in there

Remind me why I do this? Sigh.

Urgh,

Pat

I candled mine a couple times and can't say I saw anything except a yolk floating around. I am certain the eggs are fertile. Maybe I don't have a strong enough light. I tried a small (but bright) LED and also tried using a very bright spotlight and putting a paper over it with a small hole in it. Don't see no veins or mass or whatever it is I should be seeing by now. I've seen the pictures on the other threads of what it should look like but I just aint seeing it. So, for now I'll just let the broodies do their thing and leave it in their hands.

Pat - it's the fuzzy butts, that's why you do it!!

Candled eggs last eve show signs of life in some of them. This will be interesting since we staggard egg setting day by day. We dated and plan on removing from turner then placing in the new bator for actual hatching. Our only problem is new one hasn't got here yet. Posted ? in forum about using one with no fan. Will our humidity stay stable with no fan is our concern. Any comments?
