Set eggs today, 2/6/10. Who's with me?

Count me in! This is my first time. I just got a Brinsea Eco. My Comet's egg are a bit large so I was only able to fit 8 in there ( suppose to hold 10.) A friend gave me her BR rooster so I wanted to give this a try.
I hope people will post what to do on what days. I guess we candle them in 3 days-Tuesday?

Candling ques-I just made one using a light bulb in a stand and a 8 inch cardboard tube. I cut a hole in a piece of cardboard and put the egg on that.
Is a 100 w bulb too hot?

I'm clueless!!!!!!

I candle at 3 days, but I've done this before. If you are new to it, most people say to wait until day 7. There is a really good sticky that shows great pics of the different days candling. I use a very cheap $3 flashlight, but it is incredibly bright. At day 3 I can usually see the spidery veins, by day 5 the eye. I have some that are at day 14 today and I swear I could see a profile! It is so cool to see the chicks moving around in the eggs, I could spend the whole day looking at it!

I just added another thermometer to the incubator, one that I trust a little more than that new digital one, and it is reading right at 100. I am using a still air, so this should be okay.

I'm so glad we have so many joiners!

Thanks for the sticky info. I forgot about reading that as I'm new to this site. GREAT pictures there.

The Brinsea holds the temps very steady. I had it running last night, empty, and right on at 100. I may candle at 3 days because I can't wait for 7!!

Hope your 2nd thermometer is accurate.

As long as there is some space, e.g. the length of the tube, between the bulb and the egg, that should be fine - you don't leave the egg there for very long, just a quick check and that's it.

I use a very bright LED flashlight, works great even for darkish brown and blue eggs. However my husband keeps stealing it for household use because it is such a great flashlight LOL

Candled today. It's only day 3, but I wanted to see if the spike at the beginning had killed my eggs. I have some nice spiders going on!!! Can't see anything in the Langshan eggs yet, but the others are looking good! Temp is holding steady, maybe this new bator isn't that bad!

I'm glad to hear the high temps didn't kill all your babies - hopefully the langshans are good too.

I just started my eggs at 8 p.m. on the 5th, so I guess that's pretty close to the 6th. It's my first time with an incubator and the incubator is homemade, so I'm a bit nervous. I just ordered a cool-lite candler and will be candling when it arrives. I know you can candle with a maglite, but I had a $25 gift certificate to Murray McMurray and couldn't think of anything else I needed from there.

Thanks Pat for the light info. I did candle last night but all I saw were air sacs. The Comets lay brown eggs and the RIR eggs are a light brown. All pullets. I'll wait a few more days.
A friend gave me a rooster and he's only 6 months but I did see the bullseye on the yolk so I assume they are fertile. It was difficult getting the yolk back into the shell but with a lot of glue I did it!!.....kidding.
