I have some piping as I type, and they were eggs that got lost in shipping so they are kind of old.

The rules are just for general guidelines for maxing out hatch rates. Not that anything else isn't at least somewhat possible. I've hatched two, three and four week old eggs. Just had four eggs that I found under 40 degrees - most were frozen and cracked, threw the still apparently intact, ice cold ones in the incubator after they hit room temp, then Saturday the power went out for hours, the incubator temps fell to 74. I did nothing, didn't mess with it, didn't try to "save" them. Just waited, when the power came on I let em roll, they started hatching Saturday night and finished last night. They needed a little help after the power outtage but that's common - they burn too much hatching fuel staying alive. All of them, even the weakest are doing well now. Voila, totally against the rules. I've gotten eggs to hatch after a temp spike to 134.

The rules are guidelines and that's it. If it doesn't bother you to try, muddy, cracked and waxed, cold and old eggs still all have some potential, nature is DESIGNED to find a way. Eggs are geared to survive some serious stuff.
