Setting 3doz eggs tomorrow 8/11!!! Hatching buddies???

Yay you got your eggs! I was able to get mine this morning too!

I just candled them and I'm a little discouraged but hopeful. The only one I received of the color I most wanted appears to have an internal crack. I can see a white line when I candle it. A few look quite good, but I have trouble seeing any air cell. The majority have detached air cells, a couple with it in pieces. Not much hope for those I know, but hopefully some with detached cells are able to recover. They all seem very porous. I'll try to get pics the next time I candle them before I put them in the incubator, but for now, they're all settling. I'm not sure how long I should leave them settle. At least 24 hours I'm certain, but is that long enough to reattach the air cells? Hmmm
Also in a few I noticed a dark shadow in them toward the side of the egg. Does that mean they were starting to develop? Many questions, I guess I'll have to wait and see what time brings to be sure...

I'm new at this too, so take this with a grain of salt.

Air cells are the air coming into the egg thru the shell and collecting at the large end because that is the most poreous area of the shell; the air is actually between the two layers of membranes; so sitting with the big end up is the best chance of getting air back to where it belongs.
When I collect fresh eggs and candle, there is NO air cell at all.

When I see a dark shadow this early it is the yolk; it look sbig and round and not like the tiny C of an early stage chick embryo. Usually I can only see a dark spot at day 7ish, veining shows before that, some people look at day 4 for the veining. Do you see veining?

There are several resources to help you with candling. Up in the sticky is one and 2-3 threads with pics as well.

What was the favorite breed of chicken that you mentioned?

Thank you for all the info, that explains why I didn't see an air cell on some of the eggs. I did not see any veinging, just what appeared to be a round shadow. I will candle them tomorrow morning and post pics. I have read lots and lots of threads! I have Silkiechicken's thread with great candling pics saved, as well as ChickChook's thread on LG incubating - which is what I'm using. These are assorted colors of little silkie eggs, and I really, really hope to have some hatch!

These are our first chickens, with exception to a few chicks we bought early in the summer at a really gross farm - a really poor choice in hindsight. I noticed one of the chicks appeared to be having trouble breathing on the way home, it was "clicking" and they all became sick. We later lost that one after eye started bulging.

I read a ton of info on respiratory diseases, which really opened my eyes to the severity of the situation, and ultimately were not able to save them. We made sure that everything they came in contact with was disinfected or discarded, and we're starting over. My kids were really looking forward to having silkie chicks. (I wouldn't let them hold the last ones that were sick.) I decided we'd take the risk of shipping and start over with eggs from a seller with a good reputation. So that's the story behind our eggs. I think Silkies are the cutest things ever and really hope we have some to add to our family in about 3 weeks!

I hope to have pictures for everyone tomorrow when I set the eggs in the incubator. To all my hatch buddies- I hope your eggs are doing great!!!

Your welcome--glad the info helped.

My boys keep begging for silkies! But then again, when they saw the ginea pigs at the pet store yesterday, they begged then , too! LOL They love animals, and the chickens are just their size. Our rooster Henry is constantly scooped up for a trip into the house to visit. I think if the boys had silkies they would have their coop in the house!

I keep a note book to doc everything! It helps me , especially when it's 1 in the morning and I'm tired and the temps are wonky. Because there is noway I can remember the readings 3 hours ago, and 6 hours ago, and 9 hours ago . . . .

Hey can I be in? I will be late but im still setting the month. My eggs come on the 23rd through the 29th as soon as they get here I will let them sit and the in the bator they go.
