HELP!!!!!

I took the turner out of the Hovabator 1583 and put in paper towels, added more water and put in the tubing with the stick for lockdown....the temp dropped down to 93 and the humidity only went up to 50%!

I had to REALLY crank up the Hovabator (which I was VERY reluctant to touch but felt I had to when it was apparent the temp was not coming back up on it's own) to get it back to 99.5, which it is now but took me a good 8 hours to get it there (most of the time it was at 95.5 or 96 it was the last couple of degrees I was having the issue with)....then the humidity shot up to about 80%, so I pulled the red plug out for a few minutes to get it down to 75%, then replaced it but now the humidity has been slowly dropping again....

The humidity is only 64% now and I have all the water trays full and the red plug in, why would the humidity be so low? I finally decided to put in a roasting pan full of boiling hot water into the tiny bathroom that the bator is in and close the door, now I have the humidity in the bathroom up to 80% but the bator is still 64% - ARRRRGH!

The lone Serama out in the garage in the LG is doing fine at 99.5 and 70%....should I move the other eggs to the LG and bail on the Hovabator?

I work from home and am sitting 10 feet from the tiny bathroom where the bator is so I can check it constantly if needed but I have NO idea why I can't get the humidity up in it and what to do about it without opening the bator - which I am trying not to do!!!! I guess since I have the humidity up in that room I should open it and add some damp sponges to bring it up and close it really quickly....

Looking for any and all help! Good news is the eggs are still wiggling but don't want to shrink wrap them with changing humidity, we too close now to screw it up!!!!!

Warm wet paper towels....u need more water surface to air contact. I add a container of warm water with paper towels hanging out of it....I made a lil wire block to keep hatched babies from getting in the container

Chicks can hatch fine at a lower temperature. The humidity always rises when the chicks pip, zip and hatch. The moisture in the hatching egg adds more humidity to the incubator

So at what point do you make a change to temp or humidity (high's and low's would be helpful) once you go into lockdown?

OK, I was able to get the humidity back up, it is now about 75% so I am leaving it ALONE! The temp is also back to around 99.5 (seems to be going down to 99 then to 99.5....

Eggs all seem to still be wiggling so I am hoping they are all OK...

Is it common for the temp to drop so much when you take the turner out?

Did the turner create that much heat or did it take up air space?

I was not expecting to have to up the temp when taking that out so I tried not to change it until I felt I had to - now I wish I had not moved the Serama over and put them all in there, but the friend it is for is having a pretty hard time right now and a new little chick would do wonders to brighter her spirit so it will be worth it if it hatches and does well....

Yes the temps drop a lot when you open the incubator to take out the turner. It doesn't hurt the eggs because they can hold their internal temperature for several hours. I don't change the temps for lockdown. Your post reminded me that I once read that the temps don't have to be as high for hatching. Sorry I don't remember for sure, but I think the article said 95 degrees. I like to keep my humidity at 45% up until the 19th day and then up it to 65% for hatching. Once the chicks start hatching the humidity seems to jump up into the 70's. The only problem with humidity into the 80's + is that the chicks that have already hatched have a hard time drying. Hope this helps
