Well, when I went to the shelter to get Elli, the officer said that she heard that if you have human urine smell around the coop, the coons think that it is coyote urine so they stay away. Also I read to have a radio playing in the coop so they hear voices all night and won't come near. I got a radio that is battery operated from Radio shack for $15. The coop has been fine for 4 years (we got it from a neighbor who collected eggs over 60 years ago and said the coop was old then) and we had rebuilt it then. The coons tore up the floor boards and when we reinforced them, they came though the air vent (and shouldn't have fit through it). Then after we inforce that, they just waited til the chickens came out of the coop to take them. I figured after 17 chickens and 22 ducks, I will do all that I can, though I personally am not putting the smell up. I am letting the dog do that. That is why I am incubating. I have talked with many people who said the coons are taking many chickens this year. Many have lost 1/2 or more of their flock to them.
