if you weren't in california I would have you send me some wyandotte eggs

That would be a long way for my eggs to travel, but I did buy EE eggs from a BYCer in Georgia and got a 100% hatch! All depends on the health of the parent birds, a good packing job and how the post office treats them

Me too - I have 2 broodies with 8 under them (either Buff Orphingtons or Ameraucanas) and I have more in the incubator. I lost most of my flock to raccoons and fox. Reinforced the coop, building a bigger and better fence and got an 8 year old golden lab from the pound who barks and tells the chickens what and where to go but doesn't hurt them. They went in the coop tonight and she laid down by the coop and quieted down for a good nights sleep.

I lost 3 birds to coons this year, and caught 3 coons in the woods when I went out to lock up the girls at 8pm.

I don't think they can get in the run, They can't get in the coop, but time for some more agressive anti coon tactics, land mines?

Well, when I went to the shelter to get Elli, the officer said that she heard that if you have human urine smell around the coop, the coons think that it is coyote urine so they stay away. Also I read to have a radio playing in the coop so they hear voices all night and won't come near. I got a radio that is battery operated from Radio shack for $15. The coop has been fine for 4 years (we got it from a neighbor who collected eggs over 60 years ago and said the coop was old then) and we had rebuilt it then. The coons tore up the floor boards and when we reinforced them, they came though the air vent (and shouldn't have fit through it). Then after we inforce that, they just waited til the chickens came out of the coop to take them. I figured after 17 chickens and 22 ducks, I will do all that I can, though I personally am not putting the smell up. I am letting the dog do that. That is why I am incubating. I have talked with many people who said the coons are taking many chickens this year. Many have lost 1/2 or more of their flock to them.
