. One is not doing really well though. He is in the incubator. His yolk sak was not fully absorbed. He seems to be breathing fine though. The three orpington eggs have not done anything. Of the 8 Ameraucana eggs they all piped but 3 did not zip?! When I went to take the babies out to put them in the brooder they were dead with pip holes and their little beaks sticking out. What would cause this? Should I have tried to open the eggs? I just left the incubator shut until it appeared nothing else was going on. Then I opened it to take the babies out. 4 of the babies are the dark black and the 5th looks silvery! Is he a Blue or a splash? I'll go take some pics be right back

So many things can go wrong, but it does sound like your humidity was too high during incubation. High humidity causes large chicks and they can't turn to zip after pipping. Sorry you lost some

But

you have some beautiful Ameraucana babies

and yes I do help mine out if I feel they have had long enough to get out on their own and are having trouble or have not progressed and it always is fine (for me!)...I think the silver one looks like light blue to me..? hard to say just yet here are my splash and light blue...the light blue is at the front and splash behind...they are very white/yellow...

Hi

,
Your babies are AWESOME!!! I was just catching up on some sleep! I should have helped them out but this is my first time hatching chicks so I wasn't sure! I have more eggs going so if the orpingtons pip I will keep a closer eye on them! I just figured lock down meant lock down. In the injured section some one replied my humidity was to high and the chicks might have been to big to zip in which case they probably would have survived

yes you do learn and it's a steep learning curve. At least you have 4 beautiful ameraucana chicks and orpingtons are also awesome birds....i have 3... research on here about helping and not helping and decide what is best for you and if you decide to help there is some great info. on what to do...my humidity was also too high at the end and that's why 3 of mine were shrink wrapped...but I'm glad I caught two in time. Looking forward to seeing them when they are fluffed up and see what color she is.
