Wow, that's quite a variety, you're one brave hatching addict

Do you have any quail now? I've really been wanting to try some. I bought some pastured quail years ago at a farmer's market, already butchered, and sauteed it in a butter and white wine sauce. It was wonderful

. Not sure what kind of quail it was though. What's your experience?

I've eaten quail and loved it! But I've never tried hatching my own quail until now. My friend has several hundred quail of different types and I had been asking questions about temp, incubation period, etc., when she gave me a handful of eggs and said: stick 'em in your incubator and we'll see how it goes! I've fixed a small cage with a heatlamp in the bedroom where I keep my incubators, and I've bought (and washed) the marbles to put into the water dish. I'm still asking questions every time I go over. Her quail were SO cute when they were freshly hatched!! I just had to have some! I'll be sure to keep everyone posted; it's less than a week till the first handful are due to hatch.

Chickee do you know how many lumen is your Egg Lume high intensity candler is? My DH bought me a LED flashlight that is 180 lumen which seems do be doing a good job, but he could have gotten a 300 lumen flashlight for just $10 more. He thought that would be over kill. What do you all think?

So I have pulled a few clear eggs. What do you all do with the clear eggs? I am almost afraid to break them open. I had thought about boiling them and feeding them to our two dogs. It just seems a shame to throw them away.

Cattitude, you are a brave person with the staggered hatches. I am guessing you have two incubators? Please share your secrets? I accidentally on purpose ordered some Lavender Orpington eggs and they came sooner than I thought they would. I set them 4 days after my first set, I am so scared I am going to mess it up! I have an old metal incubator that inherited from my husband's Grandmother. I had it running for a few day to see how it would do and it seem to be working fine. I was worried about humidity but I guess since that the humidity is so high here in TN. that it was hard to get it lower than 45% and I didn't even add a container of water.

I have Silver, Buff, Light and Coronation Sussex and 2 mystery colored ones, along with 1 Serama (unknown color, variety as well) to add to your list!!! Not sure I am going to get chicks in each of those colors but fingers, toes, arms & legs are all crossed!!!

Sorry, I don't know the lumens on my candler. I tried to look it up but they don't make it anymore. I feel that the more lumens the better, but if your happy with how well you can see into your eggs that is what counts

The better I can see into the egg the more exciting it is

I've been bidding on hatching eggs and may be getting some bantam Polish or bantam blue Ameraucana eggs next week

I'm a hopeless hatch-a-holic

But I'm having SO much fun!!

Besides, I am down to 5 eggs. Two of my BLRW eggs didn't grow (same hen, so she will need to go) so I have 4 of my own BLRW eggs and the 1 Partridge Wyandotte egg that was shipped (which is looking really good) left. I always use my other incubator for hatching so it is easy to do a split hatch

Hi Chickee,

Would you mind letting me know how you go about using the second incubator for hatching? I have a LG 10200 still air and was wondering if I can move the eggs there for lockdown and hatching or would that be a problem coming from a forced air Hova-bator? I have one Serama (hatching for a friend) that was thrown in with my Sussex shipment and I read they should be put into lockdown on day 17, not 18 as they will hatch sooner...

Any help you can provide would be WONDERFUL and perhaps others on here would like to know how to do this as well?

Also, I can see how addicting hatching eggs can be (I am already wanting to hatch some eggs from the 1/2 English BBS Orps I got yesterday - there are 3 hens and a roo that are all about 1 year old and laying well) but what do you do with all the chicks? Do you sell the day olds or keep them until they are older then sell them? I am guessing you can't keep them ALL? LOL....even I know the chicken math probably doesn't work for that!!

My first ever incubator was an LG, then I graduated to the Hovabator 1588 then wanted an incubator that was set and forget, and got the Octagon 20 advance ex with auto humidity control. It is too tight for hatching so I use the Hovabator 1588 now for hatching. Your LG should be fine for hatching in. Just remember that you run the temp in your LG at 100.5 degrees instead of the 99.5 in your forced air incubator. I would start up your LG a week before your lockdown date because they are harder to adjust to the right temperature and humidity. Just be sure you have an accurate hygrometer (check with the salt method) and thermometer. I line the bottom of my incubators with rubber shelving material bought at the dollar store to keep my incubator clean from the mess of hatching and it gives the chicks a non-skid surface to walk on. I also cut the shelving material so the water wells are exposed under the vent hole(s) so I can add water if needed. I use a turkey baster with plastic tubing attached, supported by a bamboo skewer (look at my picture on page 6 this thread) to put through the vent hole in top of the incubator to ad water so I don't have to open the incubator during lockdown. I also use egg cartons to hatch in. Be sure to cut down the sides so chicks can get out easier and cut the bottoms out of the egg carton chambers for good air flow so your eggs don't stay too cool (will delay your hatch.) Don't open the incubator until all your chicks have hatched. Letting out the humidity will dry out the remaining eggs membranes and the chicks get stuck and won't be able to hatch.
Hope this helps
