Setting 8/12 any buddies

I actually have 3 incubators: two (with turners) to incubate and the third (without turner) as a hatcher. I've been using the dry incubation method posted by ChooksChick and I like it a lot. Room humidity where I keep my incubators is about 40%, and I pump it up to around 65% during lockdown.

On each egg I write the date that I place it in the incubator, and the pen in which it was laid. I have a calendar nearby where I note all the breeds I set that day, along with the quantity of each breed set. I do my countdown and note the date that those eggs enter lockdown, which is different for quail than for chickens. I keep an eye on bantams as they tend to hatch early... occasionally a chick hatches in the turner. I also sniff around the vents of the incubator in case there is a leaker/stinker that I need to get out in a hurry. Three times a day I flashlight the thermometers and hygrometers and do a general check of things. Otherwise it's a waiting game, and sometimes I wait very anxiously!!!

I have Silver, Buff, Light and Coronation Sussex and 2 mystery colored ones, along with 1 Serama (unknown color, variety as well) to add to your list!!! Not sure I am going to get chicks in each of those colors but fingers, toes, arms & legs are all crossed!!!

How old were your Coronation Sussex when you could tell what sex they are? I have 5 right now, they are about 3 1/2 months and the breeder that I bought them from said to hold off trying to sex them until they are at least 5 months old

One barely has any waddles or a comb, the other 4 all have them coming in nicely. Any thoughts?

Sorry, my Sussex are younger than yours! I only have 1 light (about 1 month old) and 1 Silver (3 weeks old) and 1 sex link Speckled (3 weeks old) - the rest are all eggs in the bator so far, but I can tell they are much slower developing than the Mixed breed Roo (friend for the 1 month old) they are with and the Light and the Silver are even behind the Speckled, but since she is a sex link I think that means she is also a mixed breed correct?

Anyway, I am REALLY new with the Sussex so don't know either...compared to the little mixed breed Roo I have all the other 2 look like pullets and I know the Speckled is a pullet but with the larger variety's I think you do have to wait until they are older.

Oh, Tamera on here has Buff Sussex (not in this thread just in BYC) as I am hoping to get some chicks from her, I will PM her with your question and she if she agrees with that assessment..I will let you know!

I have a pair of Coros that are about 18 weeks old and I can tell them apart now. I thought their was two females until they where about 8 weeks old. By 13 weeks I could tell one was a Roo for sure. He is still not crowing yet...
Here are two photos:

I have 3 Silver Sussex that are 3 weeks old right now and I think I have one male and two females. The male had a lighter down on his belly and face. Now his feathers are starting to come in light on his wings as well.

Thank you for the pic's that helps a LOT! Any chance you could send over the pic's of the Silver's? I just have the one so nothing to compare it to and yours might help me do that! I am keeping "it" either way as I want to breed more of them (not very many in Oregon yet that I am aware of) and am hoping to get a few more eggs to hatch or buy some chicks...

Uh-oh. Looks like 4 out of 5 of my Coronation Sussex are Roos!

My Roos have much more pronounced waddles and combs....Wish I could find the thing-a-ma-jig to load up some pics, but we just moved and I can't find it

I've heard some crowing from the barn, but when I let them out they wont crow. Maybe because my DH is standing there looking for something to throw in the pot...
