Congratulations to everyone who have baby chicks! Good job! So of the 4 dozen eggs I put in the incubator or under 2 broodies, 15 made it, 5 died at birth (2 under broodies never came totally out of the shell - not sure why, one in the incubator came out and died and two pipped through a vein and bled out), and the other 28 were not fertile
. I will be calling the people I got my eggs from just to let them know. I only had one Stanley (really an Easter Egger - Ameraucana/Easter Egger hen with a Polish rooster) made it, 2 poppyseed and 2 copper poppyseed (really mix breeds) and one Buff Orphington plus 9 Easter Eggers which were supposed to be Ameraucanas. She sold me 18 Ameraucana eggs but once they hatched out, they really are Easter Eggers - she said her chickens are not related - she got some from one hatchery and others from another. Once she said that, I knew they were all just Easter Eggers. Oh well, I am not planning on showing or breeding any of them - just for blue eggs. Here is the picture of some of the chicks. They are cute!
Easter Egger:
The Stanley is the black one in the back, the copper poppyseed (you can tell it has Rhode Island Red in it) is on the left:
The poppyseed:
it looks similar to a tetra tint from Tractor Supply this spring. It will be interesting to see what they look like when they get bigger.
Ok, I am hearing some faint chirps coming from the eggs this morning so I should be seeing some pips soon
I have an egg from each of my 4 BLRW hens to test them for what quality of chick they are producing. I have been getting some awesome pullets from one of them, so now hopefully I will be able to identify which hen it is. I also have the only egg to survive from shipped eggs that arrived smashed, that is a Partridge Wyandotte and can't wait to see what it looks like. THINK PINK everyone because I have been hatching out mostly roosters
Just talked with the lady that sold me the eggs and she is going to collect eggs and replace the ones that were not fertile!
So hopefully this time, they will be! She also said the poppyseed are a silver poppyseed. She has a polish with a white top hat and black body in there. She had 50 polish and the hawks came in and killed off all but him.
I was going to stay late at work, but my o/h skyped to say that the babies were on thier way... so I rushed home to find that 4 have pipped and I can hear chirping
