Setting (Again) April 16th-18th...

I don't know if this helps or not, but when I was young and just learning about incubating eggs (I'm STILL learning!!) I was turning my eggs twice a day and found out it wasn't entirely sufficient - I had babies hatch out with their legs splayed out and unable to walk. I put a tiny chick band on each foot and tied the chick bands together with a piece of floss to keep their legs in a natural standing distance. Within two days they had complete leg strength and were walking around just like the rest of the babies! Maybe a baby brace like the ones I tried would be helpful? I'm not entirely sure - I hope someone knowledgable replies to you soon. Let me know! Good luck!!

So sorry. I had two. One was really bad and could do nothing but lay there. I left it all day until my DSIL came up and he culled it for me. The next one could raise up some so I left it all day and kept it separate from the other chicks.....I also did not mention it to anyone. I watched it and would get it out and check it several times a day. I felt it hips and other joints in the leg....it was just one side on this chick. It seemed to get stronger through the day. I decided to give it another day and watch it. This is the third day and 'she' is standing up, the toes are all normal looking now....they were curled up and it was like she could not use the foot. Now she gets around really good.....very tiny chick though compared to the others the same breed.

So, I am just saying.....if one can raise up well give it some time to gain strength. If all the toes are there maybe the bandaid thing. Mine were not splayed but the one foot was curled up.

My thought on the other one was I could not keep it and let the others peck it as it grew because it could not move around.

Good luck...man, it's painful to look at and make a decision on too.

I jumped in and set 16 eggs at 2PM.

3 RIR
3 RIR/ EE
5 EE
5 EE/Barred Rock

There could be some surprises though if the RIR roo's seed lasted longer than 2 weeks.

I had 6 more RIR/Barred Rock mixes that I decided not to set, because I made the decision yesterday that I am going to try not to mess with mutts that don't include the blue egg gene.

Oh my goodness, that look just like one of my Barnevelders! I finally gave up on seeing if it would straighten. My DH and I had to put her down, she just tumbled and rolled around.
So sorry

... maybe it isn't the same..mine had a problem at the little elbow area..and it actually looked swollen. It was different than any of the leg problems I have ever seen.

Incubator is full and staying a constant 100.1. I will start the turner this evening since I had shipped eggs, I wanted to give them some time for the air sac to stabilize. The humidity is 37% for now. I did not add any water yet. I have been reading about dry incubation. I am going to try it, is there anyone else experienced with this? I live in Northern California, and I know climate has alot to do with it.
Setting 42 eggs in my 1588 from three BYC auctions + 4 of my own.
5 Lavendars
5 BLRW

10 Barnevelder

3 GL
3 BA
1 BA Blue
3 EE
3 WS
1 WM
3 BO

Chunked the remaining six eggs into the woods and....no cheeping. Was almost scared to do it!!

Have the incubator cleaned and ready to start heating up again.

You know, I almost did not do it. A friend brought her daughter to buy some chicks today....they left with 10....so that helps. Would like to sell a few more and then I would not have as hard of a time justifying setting the next batch.

My DH knows I am setting the next batch and sounded okay with it. My problem is I don't know how much longer he is going to be out of town. I am needing at least one more coop and run. I have two and the tractor now. Plus a small corner in the large coop sectioned off.

I have a BR flock with a beautiful BR roo and four girls. He absolutely hates me. I am thinking about taking him in two weeks to the chicken swap and selling him. If I could sell him I would move my Cochin Roo and his girl into the BR pen for a while. That would free up the tractor to put the little ones in if needed. Trying to convience myself that is what I need to do. BEFORE setting eggs tomorrow night.

I honestly could sell as many LF Cochins as I could hatch. All my friends want them.....so, all the cochin eggs, all my DGD's EE eggs. That won't even fill up the incubator....but that is ok too....ok....talked myself into it. Thanks!
