Setting (Again) April 16th-18th...

well i candled tonite...... out of 29? i think, i have 11 that are viable now. i'm actually surprised that that many have survived the incubator troubles that i've had. i also got my new incubator today and have some salmon faverolle eggs coming soon. i won another auction for som ee's but haven't heard from the seller so i guess i'm out of luck on those:( they were some cool looking eggs. cynthia, glad no major damage on your end. sounds pretty scary. and i thought baltimore weather was crazy

I am so excited about candling! I am going to do it on Friday. I have seen so many different pictures. Many look like they are holding the egg in their hand. Any advise where to have the light come from - middle, big end, small end.

Ok I candled tonight. Only day 6, I did it a day early... without giving too many stats. 16/25.... ehhh

Not really that thrilled 65% look good so far. About 5 are infertile and will probably leave the bator Sunday. Honestly, I feel a little deflated. I was hoping for a better hatch. I also....uhhh.. cracked an egg while candling

ooppppsss...I put some wax on it and put in back in the incy. It was one of the eggs that had not veinage (is that a word?) Which leads to another question: if I don't see veins but see clear liquid at the pointy end and an obvious air sac, does that mean maybe the shell is too thick to see the veins or are they just not developing? I see a dark mass close to the middle/top of the egg. (I need help on this b/c I have looked it up on Google and BYC and I really don't know what I am looking at.)

Another question: how do you tell the difference between a blood spot and an embryo. While candling I saw veins and 2 large spots near the air sac on the round end (not pointy.) If I moved the egg back and forth the spot sloshed back and forth. Am I looking at an embryo or a blood spot?

I was really excited at the start of my first hatch... with the cracked egg

and a lot less veins than I hoped for...I am feeling a little disappointed.

Thanks folks!

I'm setting these tomorrow plus tomorrow's batch. (really later today)

With a pencil....candle at day 10 and mark the ones you see movement in. At day 10, with a strong light, you should see movement. The dark spot if you watch closely you will see something and the veins will be more obvious. Day 6 is a little early. When you do day 10 and then look at the pictures you have been looking up you will know more.

So...did you just raise the lid and do them one by one in the incubator? I ordered a candler and it should be in the mail today. I have to wait, I have to wait......do not candle yet. Need to wait three more days!

bbburn, what kind of candler..you probably mentioned somewhere...is it a brinsea? You will HAVE to let us know how it works. I know of someone else that ordered a candler, waiting to see how hers works. Hers is a seabring.

I ordered a Incu-bright cool light from Incubator Warehouse. Anything will work better than the flashlight I used on the last hatch. I ordered that and the 9th thermometer....lol....the egg o meter. It just seemed like the right thing to get. Will measure at ground zero....where the egg is.

Both should be here in the next couple of days. I have time as I only set this batch on Sunday night.

And....have a question. Went out this morning at 0430 and had a dead chick in the brooder. They were 7 days old yesterday. I moved them out to the garage into the big brooder in two batches. The bigger ones one day. The last of them yesterday in the early afternoon. Everyone looked okay. Temp in the brooder where they hang out and lay around is 90...they are a week old so that should be good. I know it happens and she was right where they all lay so I wondered if they piled up on her and she could not get away. Some of the chicks....aracanas....are chunkier chicks...not that much bigger, just bigger around. IDK.....always bothers you.

Will report when I get my candler. I liked it because it cups around the egg some and that just made sense to me.

I candled last night, day 4, and could see veins on all the blue eggs and most of the light brown eggs but I mostly couldn't see a thing on the RIR eggs. I'm going to try sticking a spot light in a box with a hole in it, when I get a chance. More light should do the trick.

I have RIR eggs also. I could see in them with my not so good flashlight that I paid quite a bit for. I just ordered a candler so it would fit snugly on the egg to candle.

I also candle in a closet with no windows.....lol.

Day 14 I could see the most movement....but never all the eggs. Some I could not tell hatched and I thought they would not.

only 4 of yours look good. i see veins and movement in 11. the others are marked as questions. i don't think they will be hatching tho. it looks like most started to develop then stopped. very marked difference between the questionable ones and the ones that had veins and movement. there were a few clear in the whole bunch but they may just not have started but were fertile. i know shipping does a number on them:( i'm hoping that the 11 will make it to lockdown.
