Setting Eggs 12/28 - Hatching Buddies? Hatch-Along

On a good note, 27 of the 38 eggs I put in the bator look good. That batch that was 8 days in the mail are all duds, I'm afraid, except one. All others are growing and starting to wiggle and do their little chicken dance.

iI think they were mailed Friday... but being so cold who knows. I am excited my little silkie is happily still setting and being so good... shes sitting on 7 or 8 and she looks like a little bird rug lol

Saw dancers in all but one egg this evening! Hoping the one was just being a wall-flower or sleeping. Will check again tomorrow!

It's interesting weighing eggs to track development! I have a spreadsheet going, tee hee. I calculate where each egg should be on a given day, and then when I weigh I compare the actual weight to the expected weight and see what the difference is. If I average the differences of all the eggs, I'm right on track. But some eggs are further ahead or behind than others in weight loss. I guess it means I shouldn't alter the humidity right now, because I have as many that are a little light as I have that are a little heavy, and most of them are somewhere very close to spot on. But it will be interesting to track if any of the differences correlate with hatchability.

I am such a nerd, I know. :)

I did the EXACT same thing! Haha

However I moved the eggs that were a tiny bit heavier to the outside, and the lighter eggs (which were on the outside) to the inside. My guess is the eggs in between others are losing moisture slower just because they're surrounded by other eggs and it makes it a little harder. Mine are in cartons though so I don't know if it's the same with others.

I'm also tracking my candling results too. So far I've seen dancing embryos in all but one! We'll see if that's changed tonight :)

That's a good thought! But I checked my records and it's actually the eggs that are in the middle row that are losing weight more rapidly, heh. But the results do seem linked to hen. The middle row is all from the same hen, and her eggs all are about the same amount lighter ahead of schedule. I'll just be patient and observe I guess. :)

That's true too. The less porous or harder shelled the egg, the slower water will evaporate out of them. I was using part of an 18 egg carton and the ones that were completely surrounded by other eggs were just a gram too heavy. I also forgot to cut out the bottoms so that probably contributed too so I cut out the bottoms and shuffled the eggs around.
