that is a good idea..whish I had done that for my only chick! She is a little anti social! She is 9 weeks and now I have her in with a bunch of 5 week olds...hopefully she will learn!
Candled all 13 tonight- day 6. 10 are developing well for sure. 3 I'm unsure about... 2 are brown eggs and it's hard to tell, I marked them so I'll check them again in another 3 days. The one white one has a blood ring I think.. a dark spot in it also but no veins so I'm pretty sure it's a quitter. I'll candle it again with the 2 browns in 3 days. The rest I'll wait until day 14 to candle again.
A good sign that my bator holds a temp even when opened is that I just had it open turning and candling my eggs and it's only been shut for about 2 minutes and the light just went off. This makes me really happy with my design
I did a quick candling tonight since I only looked at the eggs quickly before I put them in. Two were cracked and I must not have noticed before, so out they go. I noticed veining in several, and could make out a little embryo in a couple. One of the little embryos is a showgirl. I think I'll have several clear, but still too early to tell.
Welcome Winkler! And don't worry, you aren't behind I haven't even set my second batch of eggs yet, so the fun shall last a long time!
DD- I ended up buying a Little Giant one from TSC near my house... but I really didn't like it. The bottom is about an inch tall >:| No room for peachicks or turkeys to stand! The bottom also didn't fit my hovabator turner (what the heck guys, the incubators are practically the same size, cut us some slack... the turner was 1/4 an inch too big to fit). So, instead of buying a new turner... I set the top of the LG bator on top of the bottom of my hovabator bator and made sure it could hold temp. So far, it's doing better than my hovabator used to, and if the seal isn't exact, there's a little more airflow. *shrug* We'll see how it works in less than 2 weeks!
I did candle 3 of the button quail eggs last night (because light knows I can't keep my paws out of the incubator). I went for the lightest of the eggs (since their shells are so dark) and I think I could see the dark forming along the sides as the membranes thicken So at least something is growing in a few of them. Commence more waiting!
Also- does anyone here know why I am not getting any subscription or PM emails? This ever happened to anyone? Tried unsub and resubbing to threads and changing my PM preferences back and forth... but no luck. Checked spam to make sure they were not being misdirected... spam folder is clean and empty. What gives?
I came within a hair's breadth of setting 4 turkey eggs early because they are getting "old". I think I will just put the oldest of the ones I'm collecting into the fridge while I wait for my peafowl eggs to be laid and arrive... I want cuddle-able chicks!! The buttons are too small to properly cuddle and they have to go to a new home the day after they hatch anyway Someone post me pictures of chickies to keep me company!
I set 30 eggs (copper marans, red stars and game) last night in the incubator and 12 duck eggs under a hen. I had 30 hatch off last week (ameracaunas and game). Today or tomorrow my peachicks will hatch, can't wait for that!
We have hatched lots of chickens in an incubator over the years and always have great success. It is a blessing to watch them break out of their shells and grow. We also have several hens hatching on their own right now as well. I'm not sure of the total count, but I think we are somewhere in the vicinity of about 300 chickens. Thank God, we are able to allow most of them to free-range! I have an awesome watch dog! Nothing gets close to my chickens. Good luck to everyone. I will enjoy hearing your stories.
Peachicks! My favorite I am looking forward to pictures! And if you're hand raising them, take a lot of pics and videos, you will love looking back on them!
I am hoping by the time I get home from work, they'll be here! I am so excited. This is my first time hatching peafowls. I had them in an incubator until my chicken eggs hatched, but those little boogers knocked them around so much I was afraid they would break, so we put them under one of our hens. Tomorrrow is supposed to be the day, but they are peeping like crazy. I get very impatient at this point. I will definitely share pictures!
Why? Candling fever. I need to NOT candle again till oh.... Friday. No, Thursday. That'd be day 8. I candled a couple of my eggies just a moment ago and the first looked awesome..all veiny and pretty. The second one gave me a bad feeling..."awww that one quit early" I thought. Then it did a little mamba in there...as if to say "no, watch me shake my tail feathers... or what will BE my tail feathers!!' I took paws off and just turned the rest. Someone sit on my hands for me.
They are looking good though... I am THRILLED. Just very very little kid-like in my candling zeal...
