Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

from what I have read in many places, I am not opening the bator during lockdown, not even to save my own life. (although, bleeding chick in fan would definitely make me do it.) I think in the last three days there is no such thing as too much humidity. Just get lots of water and sponges, and papertowels in there to get that humidity up over 75%, and keep it that way. I don't think misting them will help against shrink wrapping. I am pretty sure that happens as soon as you lift the lid. Too big of a risk for me. The hatched chicks can stay in the bator for up to 72 hours without food or water. That's how long mine are staying in there come heck or high water. lol

10 more days!!!

I know that during lock down you quit turning the eggs, mine are in an egg turner, do I leave them in it with it turned off or lay them down on the floor of the bator? I know in one of my eggs i have a loose air sac. what do i do about that?

Yes, stop turning the eggs, I would remove them from the turner. I gently lay them on the wire, some people put them in egg cartons that have the bottoms cut out for air circulation but I find it best to lay them in the bator. There really are a million and one ideas out there, you will eventually find what works best for you. I'm still learning each and every day, just keep reading and reading and reading!!!!! Then try to apply what works for you, your weather and your chicks!!! Like I said hatching eggs is different for everyone depending on where you live, your weather, ect....... It's bit of an art combined with science and a lot of luck!!!!

Hello all in our group! Seems like we're getting some good news now about live embryos. I see that candling has produced a lot of excitement! It is almost magical to start with eggs and then see something moving, living and growing inside them. My DH works out of state and every night on the phone I update him about the eggs. I don't think he is quite as anxious as I am to see chicks hatch but he listens as I go on and on! I've finally got the candling down. Have candled all the eggs, some even twice. Some are questionable as they just look like a dark mass inside the eggs. I started out with 39. Today I have 28. Only saw movement in 5. Still hopeful! I've lost 10 of the 12 BB d'Anver eggs. I'm rather bummed about that. Something must have happened in shipping them to me from GA to MD. All my eggs were bought and shipped to me. Those have been the eggs that just didn't do anything. Just yellow yolk inside. One of the 2 remaining d'Anver eggs has movement but while candling I can see 2 tiny white holes in the shell up near the air pocket. I'm debating whether to seal it or just let nature do it's thing. I can't see the holes with the naked eye, only found them when the bright flashlight I used was directly on top of it. I think I started my eggs before most of you. Lock down for me starts July 4th in the evening (that's when I started the eggs so I'm keeping to an exact time frame). I may do one more candling in hopes that the "dark mass" eggs have movement. I'm not going to throw any out unless they stink. Hope your eggs continue to amaze and excite you!!

Wooo Hoooo, we are almost there, lol..... Well, we are gaining! I've been working like a crazy person and really missing out on being home on the farm. Hoping that July will cut me a little slack, so much to get caught up on...... The excitement of new chicks is always fun! I hope everyone is well and your eggs are progressing right along!!! Hang tight!!!!

So, I am doing some reading on detached air cells, because some of my candeling is puzzling to me. It seems that shipped eggs have a very high rate of detached egg cells, and mine are proving to be so. Detached air cells will likely effect their ability to hatch. There are some great articles on this forum (BYC) regarding this topic. I am so glad I read them. I feel much better prepared. I am on day 12 now! Less than a week away from lockdown. Learning all I can about lockdown and hatch day, now.

Did you know the temperature rises as the chicks hatch because their bodies throw off heat?! How the heck can we regulate the temperature if we can't open the bator, and those little chicks are popping like popcorn raising the temps? ANYONE?!

You are supposed to open all the vents upon lockdown. The humidity and heat will go up when your chicks start hatching. If it gets too high, just turn your thermostat down slightly. I had 48 eggs in the LG last time. It never got hot enough that it was anything to be concerned with. If you are using a larger incubator, heat sinks (bottles of water, sealed) will help keep the temp stable.

In my opinion only, this is another no reason to worry or sweat about it item. I think we worry way too much about some things. I highly recommend this thread for a big dose of chicken reality https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...l-up-a-rockin-chair-and-lay-some-wisdom-on-us and the realization that chickens are much hardier than we think and much healthier if they are allowed to be chickens.

i have 12 chicks now my oldest is a little over a week old i would post a picture of them but i dont know how any help?

Annmarie, From What you have Researched, what should we do When it is lock down for the detached Aircells. I have many with saddle shaped aircells and I have a few with detached Aircells. I did not turn my Eggs the first week. Then I turn them slightly by tilting the bator an inch or so on each side. I have All My eggs in crates sitting with fat ends up. Are we supposed to do Anything else/
