Setting eggs 6-18 anyone with me

Caj I love the old timers thread. I always get caught up there reading 15 pages at a time. I think the first time I found it I read 37 pages through the night. lol It's a great thread. BYC is very lucky to have it. Definitely helps keep things in perspective.

I can guarantee that there isn't an old timer in this world that would spend $30 on a dozen eggs and have it shipped from Arkansas to South Florida in the middle of Summer. Definitely not on their first hatch, and definitely not on show quality birds. Definitely not while their 13 yr old is waiting anxiously to start her first 4H project. Chicken sare hardy, but not when we people get involved and start scooping them up, shipping them, and practicing on them. My anixiety is definitely warranted and self induced, but I tend to like it that way.

I will never have a big enough yard to buy 50 - 100 eggs and hatch away batch after batch, so THIS is my most important batch, and that is why I am treating it as such.

That's the beauty of this BYC forum. We have people from completely different ends of the spectrum here, and lots of in between. I also recommend the Old Timers thread. One of the best threads on BYC.

Annmarie,

I completely understand. Luckily I live close to Danville and have every intention of heading down one of these days to see Lucky Pickens and get some of her heritage birds.

We are also very fortunate in this area that a professor at the University of Arkansas research farm maintains flocks of exhibition quality birds that he is bringing to SOP and then gives the hatching eggs away. The top priority are 4-H and FFA kids but will let anyone have them if they are available. It is a great service.

If you would like, I can see about getting some eggs and sending them to you. He can't mail them, but I can get them and mail them.

Send me a PM with your e-mail, and I will forward you his list of breeds, if you are interested.

Good luck to you and your son/daughter on this hatch.

Crystal

Just a tip I gleaned from "the ole timers":

Never roll or move the egg from top to bottom, only side to side. Keep pointy side down when you handle and candle!

oh no... That means a few more of my eggs Are going to bite the dust.

I ordered a bunch to just get a handful ... i figured my hatch Rate would be like 10% anyhow. Right now I am in the 50% and we still have a week to go. I don't know if I will candle anymore... Once the chicks are big in the shell, I can't Tell if they are alive or not anymore....

at This point, it is just a sniff test. If I don't smell anything when i open The lid..we are good for another day.

Keep the advise coming... I am learning a lot here.

Jumping in. Set 5 turkey eggs late on the 17th. Candled on the 27th and all looked good! Hoping that I get a couple by the end to hatch. Also added 5 barnyard mix chicks to the incubator. Three looked clear, but didn't toss them yet and two looked good. So we will see. So excited, my first hatch!

Welcome. I've been trying to get my husband to let me have some heritage (self-fertilizing) turkeys but no luck yet. Hope you have a good hatch.

I took out 4 of my 25 last night since they were obviously no good. I probably won't candle again unless I notice something obviously wrong. I'm not good enough at this to be able to tell anything once the eggs get full anyway.

A friend of my Mother's gave us the heritage turkey eggs, so free turkeys are always OK with the hubby. LOL Can't wait for them to hatch and get to find out the breed, something my Mom forgot to ask.

I'm curious about turkeys and wonder if you could answer a few questions for me? What do you do with the grown (adult) turkeys? Do you eat them? Do they wander of if not contained? I've seen some breeds that are just beautiful but I think, "they must need a lot more room than a chicken". So I'm deducing that you have a farm or big big yard. Would that be true? Can you eat their eggs? A friend here on BYC told me she has ducks and the eggs are so much better than a chicken's eggs. She uses her duck eggs for baking and cooking and say they're delicious, much lighter and fluffier. I had no idea duck eggs could be good that way. So now I'd like to know about turkeys! Do you use their eggs like that? Sorry for being so ignorant but I don't want to ask just anyone, would rather question here within the group! Ignorance is someone that has not been taught and I certainly fit the bill when it comes to "the other fowl(s)"!! And welcome!

The guy we got the eggs from let his turkeys and chickens free range together. I personally will build a run for mine as they are being raised to eat, not to keep and I think my kids would get too attached if they where running around with their chicken friends all the time. But we will see. Yes, you can eat the eggs just as you do a chicken or duck egg. (Duck eggs are cool, since you can eat those if you are allergic to chicken eggs.) They will need a bigger pen then chickens do. We live on around 6 acres and only have chickens so we have plenty of room to add a turkey pen. This is my first time with turkeys and am just taking it one step at a time, if we really like raising them we might get a breeding trio but were not there yet.
