Setting eggs August 2 -- anyone else?

I have 18 silkies that I put in the night of Aug 1, my first eggs. I tried candling three on Sunday, but wasn't quite sure of what I saw ( 1 clear, 1 clear with little spots, and 1 dark probably yolk ). Decided instead of handling them anymore, I would just wait until later this week.

Hi ChickenPeep - I see you are from Olathe, I am in Lee's Summit.

I candled today, and 5 out of the 6 are healthy looking! (I think!) The 6th one looks to be infected with bacteria :(

Hey all -- how have things been looking when you candle?

I'm trying to rig something up with a brighter light so I can see into the marans eggs a little. I've read about other people's egg explosions and am horrified about the idea of having one of those.

I decided to candle today. Of the 26 eggs I set, 9 eggs were eliminated today. One had a blood ring and the rest had no activity at all. I have three eggs that are questionable. One has some veining and a red spot that looks like an embryo but no movement and isn't as far along as the others, one has a red dot but that looks like it may or may not be an embryo but I don't see any veining, and one has slight veining but I can't see an embryo. I'll check these three in a week and go from there. The remaining 14 look really good and have lost 2 grams each which is between 5 and 6% weight reduction. The veining and air sac looks good and there's lots of embryo movement going on. I'm really happy with these results especially since the eggs were shipped in this hot weather.

Anyone else candle yet? If so, how are things looking?

Weighing your eggs! I feel so inadequate. I'm a bad egg parent. I have it in my head that 42% is best for humidity and am trying to keep it as close to that as possible (by my Hova-Bator's estimation, that is). One of these days I will be bothered enough to fine-tune things.

I hatched three silkies with my mixed bunch last month -- first time I've had them -- cute little buggers! Also hatched four Speckled Sussex and am going crazy trying to guess their genders -- their combs are growing fast.

My 14 year old son has Asperger's and collects every old camera-like object we come across at thrift stores. It kind of drives me batty sometimes, but the slide projector is coming in handy right now for candling. I didn't bother candling the Wheaten Marans yet, but the Black Coppers are looking very good. I culled two... a few more are iffy, but several are veiny and lively. Legbars... three developing, but two have loose-looking air cells. Anyone had any luck hatching chicks from eggs with iffy air cells?

My husband just reminded me that I am missing the Packer game.

i got a flashlight from home depot. 20 dollars. it is 114 lumen... i shine right up through the small end and I can see my dark brown eggs were clear to start... that way I know that i didnt set a rotten egg. as for candling while they progress... I will have to let ya know... this is a new light..but I can see SO MUCH MORE that before... let me tell you...guessing is NO fun.

there is always sniffing...lol

Yeah, I'm weighing this time and entering the data into a spreadsheet that I put together that autocalcs the weight loss total and percentage at one week, two weeks, and 18 days. I wouldn't normally be so anal but my past two attempts at hatching were completely unsuccessful with a hovabator still air. This time I'm using a Brinsea Octagon Advanced 20 EX with humidifier. Once I get the data with the humidity that nets the best results I will relax and not be so anal, although the spreadsheet is pretty fun to use.
