So sorry =(

In my last hatch, one of my Speckled Sussex chicks was cover in stickiness that dried. I took her out and washed her under the faucet with Dawn. I made sure the water was about the same temp as the incubator had been using the thermometer. Then I just held her under the water in my hand and used the soap on my fingers to loosen all the sticky stuff. I dried her with a towel and put her back in the incubator. She is doing great. As she dried with all that stuff on her she couldn't move and I knew she would die if I didn't try.

This is her now.

thanks again glad to know im not the only one who has done this.

Apologies to be driving through right now (long day...), but I wanted to make sure I got a few pics up.

Someone had asked about my brooder. As you can see, it's nothing exciting. 50 gallon Sterilite containter (available at Wal-Mart for abt. $20). Two large holes made with a jigsaw -- I like having one side a little cooler than brooder temp.

SLW roo RIR hen cross

Both of my SLW roo RIR hen crosses. Can't wait to see how they look when they feather out.

The lone Cream Legbar (female) and one of our Black Copper Marans. Hard to tell how tiny the CLB is in this pic.

Hard to get a pic of how awesome this little birdie's markings are. She came from my "rare breed" mix and I'm pretty sure she's a Sicilian Buttercup.

I ended up with only nine birds from my hatch. One of the seventeen I ordered died. So the total is 25.

A dozen Ameraucana eggs on their way next week, they I am done for the year. I've heard a few of you speaking of your plans for another hatch -- I'd love to hear what you're up to.

I went into lockdown this afternoon and Im a little worried. I moved the eggs into egg cartons and put them under a warm wool blanket I had heated in the dryer while I removed the turner and added water. I added warm water and also put some paper towels down under the wire mesh to increase the surface area of the moisture. Well, it might have increased it too much because the humidity has been in the 90's all afternoon!!! I opened both vents and am hoping it will be ok since I had been using the dry method and my humidity has been in the low 20's the whole time until now. Also, the temp has been hovering in the 97-98 range since I closed the bator, I probably had it open too long. Argh! I will be so disappointed if I messed it up this late in the game.

how does everyone else transition to lockdown?

Also, I still left my fan on, is this correct?

thanks!!!

2 of my babies parents are RIR roo and SLW hen, which I've since found out is a sex link sometimes called cinnamon queen. I wonder if it works the other way around like yours? Mine look just like yours so I would imagine so, but genetics are crazy things sometimes.

I'd try taking the eggs out again for a minute (you really don't have to worry about keeping them warm for the few minutes it takes) and remove the paper towel. As far as I know, it's fine to leave the fan on. The lower temp reading might have something to do with all the evaporation going on in there. At this point, I don't think it's a terrible thing to be a couple of degrees low -- the chicks should be able to generate some heat on their own.

Not certain here -- I just had a pretty lousy hatch myself. Hopefully, someone who knows more will have a better answer.

From what I've read, the sex link coloring only works with a silver-carrying roo over a gold-carrying hen. If I'm understanding it corrrectly, yours would be roos for sure... mine could go either way.

Thanks for sharing, I have 6 of this cross in the incubator day 6.
I hope I get a chance to see how yours turn out. I think I'm seeing a little bit of lacing on the little wing feathers that are peeking out.

The chicken calculator says for SLW roo x RIR hen:

Phenotypes:

Pullets:
black patterned redshouldered/cream incomplete laced
Ratio = 1/2 = 50%, minimum of animals to breed: 2
Cockerels:
black patterned yellow/golden incomplete laced
Ratio = 1/2 = 50%, minimum of animals to breed: 2

Can I see pictures of your chicks?
