Hey there scubadeaux!!! All is well here! My five fluffy butts are going to the brooder this evening! Get my son's bantam faverolle pair tommorow (very exicted about that !

)


Will probably set another round in the incubator in June and my broody girl is due next week!!!!!!!

I think most of us here have broodies due next week, don't we???

Ok, going by MissPrissy's post from the May hatch-a-long ( https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=331817&p=30 post #293) I take total eggs subtract non-fertile subtract quitters before lockdown then count hatched vs non hatched like this -

100 eggs - 25 non-fertile - 25 quitters = 50 lockdown 25 hatch/25 non-hatch = 50% hatch rate

I am up to 13 egg back in my bator, and a broody hopefully due Mon/Tues. I think she would be lucky to get one chick given all she has been through! I would be thrilled!

hi everyone,
just a quick note to check in.
Sold some chickens and chicks today. What a pain in the you know what.
Put an ad on Craigs list and man..got a ton of responces. I know that probably sounds great, but there were some real ding dongs.
Had one gal I called last night and she wanted me to come down on my price for my BCM chicks..........
Pissed me off..............you all know how much work goes into them.I'll
put them in the crock pot before I sell them for farm store price ( NOT REALLY)
Anyway.I did sell some for a very good price..not many, but enough.
One lady was so cute...named one of the chicks Blue Bell.
Anyway, the women who wanted cheap chicks knew what they were and I figured if she was not willing to pay a few bucks up front..she would probably feed them crap.
Guess I let her get to me. There is a strong likelyhood she will not contact me again.

It is possible that I was a little blunt.
So glad others are continuing to post.so nice to hear from you.
My broodies are still setting and continue to crack me up when they growl at me.........

Hey hey hey hey, Sheesh I have missed a lot on this thread, been a week or so since I last checked in. i thought the thread was out for a while...Well. I hatched out 18 out of 25 GG bobs and here is the ratio 4 unfertile-3 quitters all others hatched! YAY! They look great, hackles and wings coming in beautifully. Also, as for my banty eggs, we found out one of our (never broody but great layer) hens named Rizzo was taking a liking to the eggs, also B our meanest nastiest territorial hen was kicking all the eggs out of the nest she was in so there went 16 quail eggs and a couple chicken aggs as well, one of which busted upon impact to show an almost ready to hatch chick. GAH! I was soooo freakin mad at her I almost put her in the timout pen! She was making such a fuss though that she was upsetting everyone else so I let her stay in the nest after I discovered that there was only 1 cort egg and one banty egg left anyway. My grandfather walked into the pen to find Rizzo eating a freakin egg! YES it was a good egg! So he threw her butt in the time out pen and we kept her there until most of our eggs hatched. We had about 2 and a half dozen in the nest under our sebright and one of our other hens. 14 have hatched. There were 5 in there this evening and I decided it was time to candle again. (Our banty eggs were staggered since some of the hens were laying in the nests of the sitting hens) 4 out of 5 were good and the remaining banty egg in Bs nest was great too! Saw a lot of movement in two of the eggs but one of them was strange. The chick looked to be 13 days but the air cell was that of a day 17 is that chick gonna make it? I mean it was lively! It was moving all around and dancing a jig in there while I was candling lol. ANYWHO, the last cort egg in Bs nest, well we all know how difficult it can be to tell whats going on in a cort egg, I pipped the aircell end with a needle a WOOOOWEEEEE can you say ROTTEN?

I mean I barely made a hole with the needle and I thought I was gonna be extremely sick Lol. Also, the 5th egg that was no good. I was candling it and the aircell looked fine but as I turned the egg it was like turning a glass of icewater there were splotches of black that were suspended below the actual black mass of what WAS a chick at one point. i have no idead what happened to that one but it was way far gone. So, it looks as though within the next week and a half all 5 that are left in both nests should be hatched out. YAY! Also, an update on momma. She was the wonderful hen who hatched my GGs once all the GGs had hatched we decided to put her in the brooder pen because she was soooo excited to be a momma, around nightfall we gave her her first 7 and after that as they hatched we took em out of the nests and right under her. She has accepted them with open wings and everytime i put in a new one she teaches it where the food and water is asap. She loves all her babies. So I dont have a BUNCH of pics of my babies in my room in the brooder but I have a few. Also some of Momma and her babies. As a side if anyone has a guess on Momma I know she is a sebright x but I am thinking cochin. I will have to be posting some what am I pics of all my flock LOL. She was a product of last years hatch and I was not sure of the 2 roos and hen I started my flock with. Rizzo is one of the first we added Sebrights soon after. From her chest patterns in the right light not to mention her broody and motherly nature she is definately a x with one of our sebrights. ANYWAYS....sorry for the babbling its getting late and I need to go to bed...cant wait for MORE BABIES!

most of the bantys are this color some with grey chests or tummys or bums but mostly this dominant black...

here is a more recent brooder pic, taken a couple of days ago, the banty in this photo is the ONLY one we got that wasnt dark grey or black. What is interesting is it is nearly all white with some yellow fluffing. All out current layers and breeders are black, golden sebright and BLACK...soooo strange. HOPE ITS A HEN!(before anyone says anything about the chicken in with the quail... I already know....diseases and this and that. I take good care of my birds. If they get ill I shalnt do it again. But for now "Silver Bullet" and "Chickie Poo" stay in my close eye. they are my favorites and they LOVVVVVE their quail brothers and sisters LMAO

any thoughts on how this singular chick came out white, or what it could possibly feather into? SEND PRAYER FOR A HEN!

thought I would add this egg pic, anyone want a button egg or ten? LMAO We already boiled these and had some bread and butter pickled eggs, delicious!

Glad everyone is doing good!!!!! Well, let's see. Sat. we drove and 1 1/2 hrs to get my son's bantam pair of Salmon Faverolle's to show!

They are beautiful!!

What sweet birds!!! Named her "Zoe" and the male, "Hansome"!!!!!!!!

I am ok with the silkie situation - I have 5 growing black silkies due in June, I am uploading a video of them moving in their eggs to you tube as I type. I had to cull the Welsummer I helped hatch - I should have let nature take it's coarse in the incubator - lesson learned

the feet were really messed up, it couldn't get to the food & water, the other chicks kept trying to smoosh it. Ah, such is life as a chicken farmer (even small scale).

Well,you guys I got it, I really got it bad...now...got 13 eggs in my bator and BUILDING ANOTHER ONE!!!???!!!!???!!!

I HAD to!! I have the eggs from my flock of goofy teenage hens, and that just leaves no room for what I like to call my "fantasy hatch"

That is the same reasoning I used on hubby, so far it is working...

Don't think my broody is gonna have much of a hatch...she was safe and secluded in my outside laundry room, she wanted out before I got up so Mr. Roo somehow got the door open let her out and brought another hen to sit while she was gone!

Broody would not come back to the laundry room and sat by my front door waiting for me to bring her box!!

So we will see, I got options for her if things don't look good...maybe she will take one of my hatched chicks??
