Setting eggs on July 9th, anyone want to join me?

Deanna- I have a little Giant incubator and turner and either my hygometer sucks (which is possible) or I really can't get my humidity above 20%... I put the eggs in this morning and will wait at least a few days to turn the turner on... I am so excited!!! I have 8 eggs set so if I get any I will be thrilled!!

Walkswithdog- thank you so much for all your advice!! You have been so helpful!! It's ALL the eggs that I set... all eight have that aircell problem!!

I recandled the ones from a friend and tossed 5. They didn't look right with black stuff sloshing around. A couple others might be going too. But one..I could see the eye!

Is that still air or does it have a fan kit?

You can add a wet sponge to the bator in a little jar to try and get it up...or soak a tampon..they hold water really well. I got a digtal thermometer/hygrometer at Radio Shack for $15.99 and it works really well. You can move the sensor around the bator to check different areas.

Also..someone correct me if I wrong, but I think that the reason for setting the eggs is to let all the tiny little air bubbles settle into one big air bubble. The air cell gets shaken up and separates into tiny little bubbles...something you see if you open one up. So then I think tat big air cell will still move around the egg if you turn it..I don't think it stabilizes until the embryo starts to grow. That's why you candle at 7 days.

Anyone? Am I on the right track?

Finally I set this morning 42 eggs in my incubator, I am little late because I decided to follow the advise if walkswithdog #12 about letting the incubator get steady for one more day, I set the eggs around 8:00 am this morning, so I am assuming today is Day 1...

I am very confusing about candling at 7 days, the hatching instructions I have read everywhere say not to open the incubator under any circumstances, not even to add water (do it through the vent plug with a straw), so how we candle the eggs without taking them out the incubator? I guess this is stupid question, but cannot figure out on my own...

I open mine..I just do it quickly. I open it to add water and I open it to candle. I candle at day 7-10 and then again when I go to take my turner out. If you think about it..eggs under a mother hen have small cool offs when she gets off them to get food or water. She just doesn't stay gone for long.

Lockdown is when you are not to open it at all if it can be avoided... that starts on day 18.... you can open you incubator and the eggs can be out of the heat for 30 mins tops!! no more than that... it actually is good for them, it simulates a hen closer. just watch for temp spikes after cloing your incubator back up
