Setting Eggs Sept. 24th-Oct. 4th-Last Hatch of the Year. Anyone care to join me?

We've got our first pip! More to the point, the chick thats pipped was the one in the cracked egg! That candlewax method seems to have done it's job :D
Hopefully when I get up in the morning I'll have some new chicks to take some pictures of! *crosses fingers*

well at 2am on the 21st day a little d'uccle chick woke me up out of a sound sleep with its cheaping....

it's staggering around in the bator cheaping every second (a sign of good health). 3 more in this hatch to go.....

one question: i read a while back about sexing day old chicks by feather..... could someone bring that to my attention again?

thanks,

Yes...I did this my last hatch and it is pretty accurate...hold their little wing out...and you should see two little rows of pin feathers...

Boys...you'll see them all the same length and it will look like one long row....

Girls...you will see a long row and one short row.....good luck

This one was pretty good!:

I used it to sex some of our new chicks and I think it was pretty accurate- from how they're growing it's looking mroe and more like a boy and a girl, just like their feathers said!

Potentially dumb question but every day is a school day and I have been used to Cream Legbar which can be sexed from Day 1 by down pattern so please forgive my ignorance:-

Does this only work for certain types of chicken or should it give an indication across the board?

I think feather sexing might be an across the board thing, but I'm far from sure! I'm going to try it with this batch of chicks as well and then see how many I got right.
Theres bound to be someone whos an expert on here though!

WOW that's 2 from this hatch thread that have made it with the wax treatment. I guess it really does work. I had tried it once and the chick made it to lockdown but never hatched. So this time around I used the nail polish treatment and lost the chick around day 10 I think. Even if others say nail polish works I think the chemicals are too strong. I will be sticking with my beeswax from now on.

Can't wait to see pictures of the little ones.

Depends if the breed is from a fast or slow feathering line. If fast feathering you can tell by the tips of the wing feathers when they are 1-4 days old.
