Setting Eggs Sept. 24th-Oct. 4th-Last Hatch of the Year. Anyone care to join me?

i fixed 1 cracked egg with finger nail polish (from a previous hatch), but it didnt hatch either. i think you may be right about the chemicals being too strong. if the chemicals get into the crack, it gets to the membrane; which in turn is absorbed by the chick. from now on i'm goin with wax.... we've got plenty of candles lying around ....:)

Potentially dumb question but every day is a school day and I have been used to Cream Legbar which can be sexed from Day 1 by down pattern so please forgive my ignorance:-

Does this only work for certain types of chicken or should it give an indication across the board?

No question is ever dumb. The only question that is dumb is the one that is not asked. Only certain breeds can be sexed by down color or markings. Your legbars are one of those. If you look at the Silkie breed. they are very difficult to sex. Most people can only do it when they see the comb and wattles forming on the roos.

Well I have had 3 hours of sleep. My second SLW chick is doing better, I had to remove more of the shell and wrap her in a wet paper towel and now she is pushing out of her shell on her own. The first chick is doing well and is so cute. I have never had chicks this tiny, the eggs were small like pullet eggs...

Well I am done, that hatched is completed now that I did the eggtopsy's today.
I started with 18 eggs, 9 in an incubator and 9 under a hen.
I have 11 chicks, over 60% live.
3 were never fertile (all liquids, maybe very early quitters?)
2 died after pip as they didn't get out in time (happened to 4 but 2 were saved)
2 died earlier, never pipped and still had a large yoke

I am happy and I've given them all to my hen for now. She is very happy & fluffed up covering them all. I have to figure out later what I will do as it's too many for her to keep warm once they start growing. Some will have to go into a brooder. It seems like all my Welsummers are boys, by their markings, but I am going to try the feather test later today when it gets warmer.

1- pipped sat forever so peeled him out doing fine
1- pipped and died

So here are my 9 out of 14

Quick question can I give some of these to my broody with week old chicks she hatched or will that not work plus I have another broody due to hatch her eggs Friday was just thinkin I could split them up and give them to broodys to raise. Any thoughts on this?

It might work, put them under her at night when she is sleeping. I did that with a broody hen and she raised 12, 5 day olds for me...

I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer last night and went to bed at around 2am with my 2nd chick 1/2 way pipped. I woke up around 7:30 this morning and the chick was totally shrunk wrapped. How does a chick shrink wrap when the humidity is high 60's low 70's? Went to bed and it was 66% and woke up it was 71%. Makes no sense to me. I had to do major shell removal and literally bathe the chick in warm water to get the membrane off. It was so shrunk wrapped that I thought it was missing a wing...LOL. Both chicks are doing well and #3 just finished hatching. Now if the any of the other 5 would do something I would be even happier.

Edit: Oh and BIG congratulations on your hatch!!
