Setting Eggs Sept. 24th-Oct. 4th-Last Hatch of the Year. Anyone care to join me?

Ugh.... disaster struck my little one :(  I was watching for any movement and I look to see a little movement, then crack in the egg, very low again.  Here comes the little beak... followed by yolk dripping around it.  She/he had stuck her beak right through the yolk.  Then I could see a ton of little yellowish air bubbles popping around it area.  I brought the bator into my bathroom and turned the hot water on to get the humidity up to 75% then grabbed the egg out.  I carefully chipped the egg away from the air sack first and then slightly lower.  The chicks head was strait down, past it's feet.  It quickly pulled it's head up and started gasping for air.  I cleaned as much as I could around it's nose and beak and tried to wipe all of the air bubbles off.  I layed it back into the bator (still half of it's body in the shell) in a wet wash cloth.  The bator's temp and humidity never changed... except for going up a little bit.  Hopefully it didn't inhale too much fluid :hit   But it is open mouth breathing and I know that's not good...

None of the other eggs have piped yet, so hopefully I didn't hurt any of their chances!!!!  But I couldn't just watch that little one drown...

The yolk wasnt obsorbed? He may have to take more time to zip all the way.Not sure with what she went thru wouldnt make her mouth breath. but lets hope she will be ok.If the others havent pipped and you were in a moist bathroom cant see how you could have hurt them as long as humidity didnt drop below 65 the ywill be ok.

By the way its a little hard to tell but the zip in heregg doesnt look too low to me.They usually zip sort of centerish but not in the bottom
.I did have one zip at the bottom but came out perfectly strangly enough. All i can think was it did pip & zip quickly so i guess got to outside air before it could drowned

Here is a picture of the gross stuff that I got out of it's mouth... I assumed it was yolk but I'm not sure.

It has now kicked free from it's shell and has a red and yellow string just attaching it to the egg. But it looks to be breathing normally now! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

I am so sorry to hear that. You have done what you could for the little one. Now it is Mother Nature's turn.

Wow, reading these posts...I'm right there with the highs & lows...whew! LOVE the pics of the baby silkies...I'm gonna have to try that in the not-too-distant future!!!

Wanted to post a couple pics of the interesting color I am getting in my BO/RedStar(red sex link) chicks. The Red Star hens are very RIR looking with no white feathers. A couple of them have black tips on tails and some on neck feathers. When I selected them as chicks, I took the darkest ones. I thought the markings that are coming through on the chicks look pretty interesting...and makes me wonder what breed besides RIR was used to create the sex-link mothers:

A couple don't have the white tips...as below (but most of the eight do:

So where the umbilical attaches to the chick closed and it is just a strand hanging? That is a very good thing. It could mean that it did absorb most of the yolk. The yellow string is where the poop sac was attached. Keeping my fingers crossed for the little one.

I remember reading somewhere that a roo has a white tipped wing and the pullets don't. I hope that is not the case and it is a sign of the other breed.

One site I read says in RIRs, it seems to her that the tail feathers of females come in faster...if that"s the case, I have 6 female, 2 male, from all eggs which were essentially oval as opposed to pointed (from the earlier discussion that pointy eggs tend to be males).
We shall see:)

The 2 that were zipping have now hatched. I am thinking the B/S egg is a blue. Dark feathers with lighter colored tips on the ends of it wings.

Here are the first two almost dried off:

Hey Everyone; my Broody Hen did it! 5 of the 8 eggs hatched between day 22.5 and day 23. I checked the other 3 eggs and they were just stink.

That was this morning, I came home to only find 4 chicks under my Hen, the smallest one is just gone. Not too sure what happened or where the chick is. If she was too weak would mom eat her? I do believe she ate all the shells because those had disappeared as well by the morning when I checked. Hen and chickies are in the coop with the rest of the birds, but no roosters. This is her first and my first batch of eggs.

Also The Rooster of these was a White rock, and the only Hens were golden comets and white rocks, so how did I end up with a mostly black chickie? Im still pretty happy even though there was a loss.

CUTE!!!
