Setting Eggs Sept. 24th-Oct. 4th-Last Hatch of the Year. Anyone care to join me?

Wilma, my BO who is broody and hatching my eggs, is doing well. After 6 days she got off her nest and got a drink, a nibble and a potty break. She immediately got back in the coop and on the nest- THE WRONG NEST! After much wringging of hands and plotting and planning I was able to push her off the nest (couldn't lift her do to my being vertically challenged). She did not want to budge, she flapped and all but stuck her feet into the side of the box. Eventually she turned around and saw the box next to her was filled with eggs. She went right in, fluffed herself and continued her and my project. It's day 7- 2 weeks to go.

VERY COOL! I'm not 'creative' like that (although I wish I were!) hehe

It's roughly a week since some of you started your eggers - just wondering if anyone has candled yet and how that's going? I'm tempted to candle *today* since I read that you don't have to wait til day 5 (can see as early as day 3). ?

Chicky blessings to everyone and welcome to those who have just joined. =]
I am on Day 4 but I am going to wait a few more days. The temptation is there but this time I am going to be a good girl and wait.

Day 7 today, first time we have ever candled eggs. After checking and re-checking...one of eighteen looked very speckled, and having looked at all the pics on the internet we could, we were afraid it may be due to bacterial contamination. We decided to pull that egg. Upon open inspection, it looks as if it was just the nature of that particular shell...the air sac (which we could not identify in any of the candled eggs) was present and appeared to be of appropriate size, and the embryo appeared to have been developing adequately...we feel sad and sorry to have stopped that one, but are grateful for the knowledge it gave us *sigh* The first two pics are of eggs that looked "normal" (as far as we could determine), the third pic is the one with the speckled appearance, the fourth pic is that egg after opening.
Continuing on with the remaining 17 eggs, and hoping all is well with everyone's clutches:)

When you see a lot of those "white spots" or speckled as you called them, it is called a porous egg. Do not feel too bad about pulling the egg most of the time these eggs start to develop and then quit during incubation.

Ive never heard of this no turn for 7 days with shipped eggs tip.
Sounds interesting. I wonder how my shipped eggs will do with fresh eggs being turned??

Someone on another hatch thread said they used their own eggs as a control to see how they did compared to shipped.Might be interesting to try that.
ived turned mine too from second day so humm worth a try next time.Maybe get more to hatch.
You might try a few of your own along with the shipped.Dont turn either .Interesting.Love to hear results later.
