Keep in mind the humidity is raised by the SURFACE moisture not by volume of moisture in a container.DEEP doesnt help Only surface in the air. . Lay a wet rag out in the bator a small one as a large may bring it up too high.Works better than a jar. Lockdown I use 2 wet rags about 3 inches or 4 long and open them to about 2- 3 inches and then rewet thru the straw in a vent hole (position rag under a vent hole) dont have to open then to get more water in so vital in lock down.. Straw or fish tank tubing and adding water with a large syringe or bastor is the best idea i have seen on here yet. Used it on 5 hatches. if you have a styrofoam bator just make a hole with a pencil where you want to ad water and not get the eggs wet. Bottom area of lid is better as you can put water in the vent hole you have towards the top center too with a straw so adding water in 2 areas..

Interesting I havent heard this one...and do they then hatch? Would love to find out. I read the blood ring is caused by bacteria ...maybe it can be killed by cold?...hummm

I have 5 bouncing baby chicks developing, so happy (shipped eggs). 10 more days until they are due!

just found this thread... I set 4 of my own pullet mixed eggs on Sept 22. (SLW hen with a Blue Splash Wheaten Americana Roo) hope they hatch.the eggs are small...

I was suposed to be finished...but I also just set 2 BCM eggs, 1 RIR, 4 or 5 EE... i lost count.. I set these just the other day... I know I am out of the date parameters... but I am going to follow along for support...lol Nice to see you all again...

Glad to see another familiar face. I am setting more eggs this week too so I will just have to change the title of this thread again. Keep saying I am done and then I find another breed of chicken I like and have to get eggs.

I have heard that bacteria causes it also but my question about that is why does it seem to happen more to shipped eggs than local? I do know that the ring forms from all the blood vessels breaking down from the deceased embryo. So no, it doesn't hatch. When I candled Saturday night I placed all 6 of the bloodring eggs in an egg carton in the fridge so I could do the eggtopsies the next day when there was more light. When I went to take a picture of a bloodring last night they were all gone.
