You're right, they do want money :) I did it because I use internet mainly through my phone. I was having a really hard time attaching photos. So I finally broke down and paid so that I could do it easily. But you're right it should be free.

That's cool..you know i really wish they had a mobile version of backyard chicken...would make it so much easier to talk on here.

Im not up in all the internet phone data etc but my little att has the internet and i get byc.Luckily b/c every place i go ..im on here! cant stay off one day!FGotta see whats going on with everyones eggs

Try the app Tapatalk. I use it on my phone and it works great. I've been lurking on this thread. Really enjoyed everyone's comments and I learned a lot. Here are my little ones that hatched on Friday.

What adorable chick's! I love all their little pom-pom heads, so cute!
Hens like that are invaluable.

She is beautiful. Does her sister look just like her?
Yeah, her sister looked almost exactly the same as her except that she had a poofier head. I was actually hoping to get one of their eggs in under this hen, but I don't think I was able to. Next time for sure!
Chick count is still stuck at 3- I don't think any of the other eggs will hatch, and I'm going to remove one of the infertile eggs later today so I can have a better idea of whats left. But I still got that family picture!

Hey everyone - it is getting near that time for my little eggies. I have a broody hen who has done a good job, it is her first time and my first time as well, she is a 6 month old Cochin. Need some advice - day 21 is Monday, I havnt moved her out of the coop yet, but am concerned for a few reasons. I would need to add food and water containers for the chicks and that would mean leaving them on the ground of a deep hay system coop floor. I may be able to bust the seperator down between my broodys nest box and the next one to make it big enough for these things. I have a mouse problem, im not sure how to get rid of them but as its cooled down ive started seeing them more and more, any easy pointers? I think the Con for removing them from the coop is that when I went to put them back they would probably get picked on... Any advice? what do people normally do, and what is this 'lockdown' i keep hearing about.

Thanks

Don't worry about the chicks having food for the first day or two- they absorb their yolk and are fine without food for a short time. Do you have a separate pen? Like a little rabbit hutch or something? We always use a little rabbit hutch for our broodies to raise their chicks in, so I don't really know what to do if it's just the coop. And electrical traps work great on mice! Instant death, just tip the mouse out and put a little more food in. Sorted our mouse problem!
And lockdown is generally more for incubators than broody hens- its the term for the days until hatching (around day 18 if I remember right) where you don't touch or turn the eggs or open the incubator because they're getting ready to hatch.

Sadly it looks like 3 is the amount of chicks we'll be having this time around. I removed the known bad egg, and candled the other three. The silkie cross egg stopped developing around week 1 it seems, the second egg was slipped in by a sneaky hen at some point in the past few days, and the third egg had somehow slipped it's air cell to the side, so the chick inside had no chance ):
I have no idea when the air cell slippage happened- I didn't even know air cells could slip in eggs under a broody! It must have happened at some point in the past few days, since I candeled them a few days ago and everything seemed fine. I might try to bring myself to perform an eggtopsy on it, but I'll probably leave it. I can't learn anything from it, and it'll just make me upset ):

On a more positive note though, I got close ups of the new babies today!
First born was Wax, the little cracked shell baby!
Second born was this little guy! His face pattern is adorable, it makes him look shocked all the time

And third born was this girlie. I think she might have some silkie in her somewhere because her little comb is all black! (But most likely not!)

Whew, this certainly was a stressful month! Now these guys are out though, I can start concentrating on my exams. Hopefully there'll be another broody available by the time they're finished!

Well, my hatch didn't go well. I started with two dozen eggs and got one live chick. She is quite beautiful though!!!

I am worried about trying to raise a single chick. Any tips on that? Her closest siblings are 4 weeks and she is just too tiny to put in with them.
