Setting eggs today...20th May...anyone else?

Hehe

But supposedly, it is all that work that gets the blood vessel network to dry up and the belly to close up.

It is hard for me to watch and not want to help though. I have to walk away and do something else. And yes, you are right, it can take them two days!

Good luck!

I just got back from candling 10 eggs under my broody...found two browns ones that must have been laid when she got up for a potty/streatch break so took them out (I'll keep them separate from my selling eggs just in case there's a "surprise inside". LOL) My homemade candler was a toilet paper tube (with about an inch and a half TP still on it) and a mini mag light. I had a flashlight with LEDs but it wasn't bright enough.

I was estimating this to be day 7 and was expecting to see small dot with veins but I saw about half of the egg in darkness on 7 or 8 of the eggs. Kind of like day 10 (middle photo) or day 12 on the Chicks are Here Egg Candle pixs thread.

So...either my eggs are farther along than I thought, or since this is my first time candling and incubating, I messed up somewhere/somehow. The first egg that looked like that (second one candled) I took a long hard sniff to try and see if it was rotten (someone on one of these threads said to smell the egg when checking), but didn't smell anything.

Could I join in? I added 2 and 1/2 dozen eggs at 6am on May 20th. All my eggs are backyard mix from EE to various bantams. I also have a broody sitting on 3 of her banty eggs. We shall see if she hatches them. But as for my incubation run, temps have been anywhere from 95-102 because of the crazy spring weather we are having here in Clarke County Virginia. Not sure how the eggs are doing from the temp fluctuations. I will be candling this coming Wednesday to see how they are doing.

Ashem0, fingers and toes are crossed for a great hatch. Can't wait to hear how things went!

Hi Compton, thank-you for your happy thoughts for my babies! I now have 3/4 rocking about the place - so fascinating to watch - and one that has pipped!

What are you planning on doing with your 30 odd chicks? Do you sell? Or just have a large flock?

BTW - this isn't my thread - it is Loopy12's.

But welcome anyway!

I just set mine on the 21st, only a day behind you! Let's hope both our hatches go smoothly with no losses. <3

CG - sounds like me! I saw similar on my RIR's. S'posed to be day 5 but were really day 15... 5 days later they are cheaping and one has pipped! Just hoping my Maran's survive the excitement.

I'm hoping for swift hatching for those rockers so you can get back to optimal conditions for the marans...

Hi Compton & Amykins...

New batteries in my torch last night meant a much better candling. On the down side I discarded 11 eggs. One quit around day 5, the others were infertile. Boo. I shall tell the guy I bought them from, because that's a high infertility rate really, and am hoping he'll give me a few more next time I'm passing (he's a hour's drive away). I put the three spares in, but part of me hopes they won't work so I can avoid a staggered hatch.

Looking forward to chick pics from several people then, somewhat earlier than planned!

Oh, dear...I'm so sorry for your loss, Loopy. ;;

I'm starting to become concerned for one of my ducklings. It's too early to tell, but I fear it may be a quitter. I'm on day 7 and I can clearly see the embryo on one egg, but not on the other. I just see a network of veins and I'm not sure if it's growing anymore. I hope he's just hiding or I'm just having trouble seeing it through the dark-ish shell, but since I only have 2 eggies, I'm beyond paranoid. ;; I have my own thread in the hatch-a-long forum if any experts can take a look and tell me if they're hitting their benchmarks like they should be.

Is there an update on what the seller said regarding the fertility rate? I was lucky enough to find a local call duck breeder to get mine, and he's got uh-mayzing fertility rates. He's got very busy ducks, hehe!

Hi everyone,

I have a baby chick!

Assisted out around 11pm here last night (midday next day here now).

Completely black – looking more like an Australorp than an Isa brown! But with all the hiccups I’ve had with this fellows eggs, nothing would surprise me now.

One other has died. So I have 2 left now and of course my Marans.

I am glad I assisted it out – it didn’t look to be in the right position. Most likely because I kept turning them, not realising they were due to hatch shortly! Because of this, I’m now worried about the other 2, which I’ve not had any movement from in over 24hrs. What to do??

My little black chickie is quite robust, despite my interference! Though I think it has one toe too many on each foot! It is in the brooder box now and would not stop cheeping so we put a soft toy under the brooder/heater with it and it stopped immediately! Needed some company under there apparently! And something to snuggle against, being on its own.

Loopy12 - that's a huge loss, so sorry.
