Setting eggs today 5-3-12...anyone with me?

YES...don't give up just yet. What temp. have you had it set? I have read that if your temp was a little low it can take quite a bit longer.

I have it close to 100. No spikes but it does go up and down between 97 and 100. Humidity was around 35 for the first 18 days then up to 65. I am already looking at more eggs to buy. LOL

Sorry to hear how its going. I had wanted the buff brahmas the most out of my hatch. And of course, that was the only ones that didn't hatch. Also, my first setting last month was all buffs and none of them made it.

I am debating whether to just try and find a couple of buff chicks, so that they can all grow together.

The one I saved, is doing great. He is a dark brahma. So I ended with 2 light and 2 dark.

I hope everyone is able to have a great weekend. I will be spending mine painting the new coop. Hubby built it for me after the first hatch. A push to not give up.

Oh, I was just hoping that when I got up this morning you guys would have had more hatch. :( I am so sorry. I agree with you though mbleily, I would not go beyond day 24.

Like I said before I am starting anther hatching right away and it will be a staggered batch, so if you are up to trying again I would love to have your company. :)

As for mine, all 17 hatched. We ended up helping in one way or another the last three. The last two were upside and turned around in the eggs. They had piped, but I think with a foot or something, it was odd. The last two are still in the incubator gaining their strength. I think they had been trying for as long as the others, but just couldn't get the right leverage. I had a hard time debating on helping or not. My husband encouraged me to help, so we could learn. In the end I think it was a good thing. I do have to say that I am sooooo glad I put them in the incubator when I did because one week later would have put in hatching on a day(s) when I have a huge wedding cake to make and deliver. So, I have learned from these past two days where I let the laundry go, the housework go and put off and put off working on the cake that I would be in big trouble if it was a big cake!!!!

So this morning as soon as I type this I am off to make some buttercream and get this cake done so I can deliver it this afternoon...then I am going to have a photo shoot with the babies and I will post pictures. By then the two in the incubator should be out and ready to be with the others. Have a great day everyone.

So here are some pictures I promised.

I think this little thing is going to be pretty, whatever it is, but it is one that is missing the toenail on the middle toe, on both feet.

I also like this one, I think it will be a pretty blue or splash chicken.

This is the runt so to speak, the last to hatch and one we helped, it is also missing the toenails on the middle toes.

Love this little chipmunk one.

And here is a group shot of all 17. We are having very unseasonably cold and wet weather here these past few days, so we moved them from the brooder in our garage to my tub with the Brinsea EcoGlow heater...they are loving it much better than the garage. :) See how little that red one is compared to the others...wow, such a difference.

I am giving up the ghost. since I have 11 more eggs hatching next week on wed I am just done. My son is going to look at the eggs and tell me how far along they were. I am afraind a lot of them were ready to hatch and didn't for some reason. They had good looking air sacs as far as the ones I could see into. But one is rotten because I could smell it just didn't know which one. I hat loosing all those eggs. I will be setting more on the weeks of the 4th of June. I am going to wait for the week end to set so they will hatch on the week end.

mbleily,
I am sorry they didn't hatch, I would be curious to know why...especially since you had two that did hatch. What do you have hatching this week? Please keep us posted on what you end up with this week. :)

What will you be setting in July? I set my Cream Legbars last night and have FBCM and Showgirl eggs coming this week for the second incubator.

Are any of you familiar with Brahmas?

According to the eggs, I should have 2 dark and 2 light. I am questioning whether the one I saved is actually a dark. Cause he doesn't look like the other dark and is definitely to much color to be a light. The lights only have a grey/blue tint to their saddle area. Did I get a buff or partridge after all? Maybe miss marked by the seller?

JDChicks,
I have a few brahmas that I got from the feed store and one that was sent as the extra "rare" bird from the hatchery. I would go look at Murray McMurray hatchery site and look at the videos they have for each breed. It might help you determine for sure. My dark brahma that I am pretty sure is a roo, that came from the hatchery was very brown and quite dark as a baby...here are a few pictures.

This is one week old.

This is about 6 weeks old.

Not sure if that helps. But I would think looking at those videos or searching for Partridge Brahma day olds might help too. :) Whatever they are, they are cute!

Thank you. I went and check out Murray's site. The 4th born looks like the dark chicks on the site. And the "2nd born" looks like the buff chicks. Should have added a front shot cause the darkest one has a reddish face.

This week I have some oliver eggers hatching. Some will be plain ee's and some are F1 and F2. I am hoping for a good hatch on them but I am crossing my fingers. I just did a quick check on the air sacs and a couple look really small and some are way big. I did see veining in a few. I just did the top candling as I didn't want to take them out. The genesis recovers the heat really well and I leave the top halfway over them so there is still heat coming down on them when I do this. Lock down is on Wed. There are supposed to be Golden laced Wyandotte, pPlymouth jBarred Rocks, Buff orpingtons, Brown leghorns, Delaware, EE, and Golden cuckoo Marans , and Welsummers. The last two will produce F1 Then the F2 are French Black copper Marans roo over F1 to produce F2. Oh the first group has a Blue Wheaten Ameriaucana roo over them. I have only 11 eggs left So If those two are bad that leaves 9. I am not totally sure about all of them even. Hope to get something interesting out of these. At least they are all marked so I know what to expect when they hatch.

In June I want to set some mixed eggs again. They have Ameriaucana roos over them and they are RoadIsland Reds, Ameriaucanas, Light and dark Barhamas, Chancelers, Oprhingtons, Australorps, Delawares, Anaconas,Brown leghrons and she said a few more. So they should be EEs and Ameriaucanas. I love the colored eggs.

I have heard if they have a straight comb they will not lay green or blue eggs. But that is fine with me. I don't minds a white or brown egg either. They really add to the mix. LOL My egg customers love my eggs because they are all so different.
