Setting eggs today 5-3-12...anyone with me?

Okay, I understand. I have never seen more than one black spot in the eggs I have candled, so not sure what that means. Do you see any veining? It would look like a spider, with legs stretching out? Also, if you do end up buying a chick, buy at least 2, chickens are very social and need a "flock" even if it is just two. One will be quite lonely.
I haven't seen any veins. I'm going to take a picture and post it. One of the crack and one of the candleing. Yeah. I was going to get 2 female's so that we can have eggs and not buy any. Eggs are getting a bit pricey.

Hi Alyssa - I really hope your egg does hatch, but if you still need a couple of hens, you might want to see if there are any BYC'ers around you who might be able to spare two hens/pullets - that way you wouldn't have to fuss with any extra small order fees if you got chicks from a hatchery. (Or try calling the feed stores around you and see if they'll have chicks any time this spring/summer - you might be able to go and pick out a couple yourself.) I *might* have a couple pullets I'll sell this summer, but I don't know if you're anywhere near MN....

But I do hope your egg hatches!

went to top up the water tonight and candle the 8 remainding iffy eggs and shattered the only egg with veins

i stupidly dropped the power cord end on it, that's just my luck , i will give the others a few more days before calling try two a flop, i don't think that will help much but

Oh...I am sooo sorry to hear this. Don't give up just yet though. Are your eggs brown shells that might be hard to see veining this early?

I candled mine today.
(I couldn't wait for day 7 - no self control I guess)
I didn't see any veins but I did see a dark mass taking up about 1/4 of the egg. These eggs are dark brown I'm hoping that is why I didn't see what I wanted to. I at first thought that the dark mass might be the yolk as in any unfertilized egg, but when I got a regular supermarket egg out of the fridge, there was no mass when candled. I am hoping this is a good sign? Any opinion on that?

Dracon - I feel for you man. Don't give up yet.

i have 3 white eggs from the leghorn and 5 now from the Isa browns the shell colour is currently a very pale brown almost cream on some
the one i broke was the darkest of the brown eggs. i plan to let them hit day 7 before i do anything with them but i just have a feeling that i have lost the only
one that was going to develope

And here are some more I just took.

Kind of blurry sorry >.<

And this one

When I just candled them, I saw a cluster of black dots at the top of my egg. I couldn't get a picture of them, and if I did you wouldn't make it out. Is that something?

Hmm. I don't know - it's still early to tell. There was a dramatic difference for me between day 4 and day 5 (are you on day four?). I'm not positive those black dots are part of the embryo/veins but I saw a couple of dark spots (they weren't quite like yours, though) on a yolk a couple of days ago and thought maybe the egg wasn't fertile or had died - but now it's definitely growing and looks like an embryo with the veining.
