Poor pathetic little thing with no eyes! I can't believe he made it to a store alive!

It's lucky to have you to care for it.

I would have tried to save it too.

I have resisted the urge to buy store chicks so far mostly because I am to busy to get there when chicks come in (working mom plus college student doesn't leave much time) and because I am concerned about the potential of spreading disease between vaccinated hatchery chicks and the un-vaccinated ones I hatched out myself, some of the vacs are live virus and can actually spread the disease I think I read somewhere. This may be a ridiculous fear, I think I read to much....

Nope...not crazy

I went and purchased 3 SLW, 1 austra white, and 1 black New Jersey. They are all eating and drinking really well, so hopefully we won't loose any.

Candled all 30 eggs (day 7) and 25 have moving embryo's

Three have nice dark shadows but not sure about them and the other 2 I think may be duds but will wait until day 14 and check them again.

And that is the reason I send DH to the feed store!!! He called me from TSC last month and said...hey, do you want me to get you an incubator??? They have a really neat one with all the bells and whistles and you have been talking about raising some of your own!

I quickly said no...I want to try to do it with Mother Nature first and BTW...that means you will have to build another coop/fenced area!!! He quickly agreed that we don't need it yet!!

I candled tonight. I wanted to wait, but it is my very first hatch and I am so curious. I have one egg with deffinite movement!

I am almost certain I have 1 with a bloodline, so I marked it BL and will check it on day 14. There were 5 others out of the 12 that I am not certain. There is a dark spot, but I cannot see veins yet, and will wait until day 14 for those too.

I know it does not sound successful to most, but I am just very excited about the one with movement!!! This is my very first time making an incubator, purchasing eggs, and hatching, so I think I am doing okay. Yippee for me...I am going to bed happy!

Goodnight:)

We are on day 11 and have been gone for the last 5 days. DS and I went out tonight and took the high power flashlight with us. We definitely saw a variety of things in our eggs. 11 eggs candled and I think we have at least 50% with movement. Some seem to have the enlarged pores and some we are not sure of. Since this is the 1st time ever trying to hatch much less candle, I am gonna give it a few more days and try again! Some of the shells seem to be thick and too dark to see through. I am going to try a different method I saw in a photo where you place the egg in the opening of a paper towel roll and see if that helps some. Might even have to try a different flashlight. We are so excited

and already in love with the little fuzzy butts!

Whether we get one chick hatched or we get 11, we are excited and can't wait til May 3rd!

Oh goodness. My dh knows better than to call me to ask. He would just get it and say Merry Christmas or Happy Birthday. He knows what I would say and he is such an enabler. I wonder if sometimes he's worse than I am. He actually talked me into buying a roo at a swap once. We told each other we wheren't bringing any birds home and where selling all of ours even if we have to practically give them away. In an hour ours where gone and 20 minutes later he wanted to take a walk and look around. I knew what he was up to. We saw a very pretty roo. I still don't know what the color is called but who cares. He's pretty. Anyway, he kept telling me all these good things about him. Got him out of the cage to look him over and then asked my advice as to where would we put him, which girls would work best for him, etc. He came home with us and even has a name. I thought he was a calico but a byc'er told me what he was but I can't remember what they said. Pretty much a mutt. But he's a pretty mutt. My ugliest roo produces some very pretty partridges. He drove 2 hours to pick him up too.

My DH is an enabler. But we enjoy working together on the pens and going to auctions. It's our new favorite past time.

I made one once using one of those big flash lights that hold the square battery. I cut the top off a 2 liter bottle and put duct tape all over it to make it so the light wouldn't come out the plastic. I used the spout to put the eggs on. It works well. You can also find candlers on ebay for cheap. I bought mine for $5 a year ago. They really are one of those "must haves" when hatching eggs

Yeah! for all of you candling and seeing babies moving!

I get so attached to the little wigglers, I just love seeing them squiggling around in their eggs. I candled mine today also, all 13 are still looking good. Just keep swimming, just keep swimming,...

We are half way there, just 11 more days to go! I can't wait!

Mom's flock, don't feel bad that you didn't see a lot. You are hatching Ameraucanas aren't you? They are so much harder to see through!! Yours are shipped eggs also, which are just less successful due to shipping stress. Every chick you get from them means success. Good Luck!
