Setting Eggs Today? I am, hatch with me?

Thanks emvickrey for that suggestion! Will have to put the son to work creating an "egg viewer"!

Just2rosey...I couldn't agree more..just keep swimming, just keep swimming!!!

We should hatch about the same time!!! Momsflock... some of the ones I can't tell yet are Ameraucanas also...they are harder to see but I hope that with our new finagled egg viewer, we will be more successful! Good luck everyone!!!

Well my little silkie hen finally decided to truly be broody again, so I gave her some of her own eggs out of my incubator. She is now sitting on nine of the eggs due to hatch May 12th. Seven are her own, plus 2 of the cochin eggs. She's a great mommy, I am quite happy to let her do the hatching.

I got an LED flashlight at Target that is 130 lumens. It shined right through the one guinea egg I checked on Friday and we saw veins & "something". Looked promising. I won't check all of them. I'm too afraid of leaving the top off for long.

BTW, blind chickie passed last night. But I do feel better that she had a good meal and drink and hung out with quieter buddies under a warm lamp. When her crop filled it was way off to the right so it didn't look like she was normal.

I can't remember what day we're on but the keets are due on May 11th or so (that's 28 days!)

Could not resist, had to show the kids, so I checked the questionable eggs. 4 of them have veins, 4 look bloodline, and the other 4 have movement!!!!! (okay, we rechecked them all!) 8 out of 12 is not so bad, especially shipped eggs. I will soon have SLW in 2 weeks! Hopefully there is at least one pullet out of that bunch!

Now the boys want to disect the eggs that are bloodline.

Lutz, I am sorry to hear about the blind chick, but you made sure its last hours were comforted and loved.

I have questions about lockdown: what exactly is the proceedure?
The reason I ask is because my homemade bator will rise to 102 F if I completely close the lid, but if I leave it proped open with an index card (slight crack) the temp stays between 99- 100 F. Can I leave it cracked at lockdown. Do I HAVE to put the plugs in and completely close it tight?

Thank you all for your help and support. This link is the best!

Can you get your humidity up enough to hatch with the plugs out and the top cracked? Have you tried? I would experiment a bit between now and then to see if you can get it up where you need it and control your temps. If you put enough wet sponges and or paper towels you should be able to. You might want to start a new thread asking this question to reach some more experienced hatchers, I think most of us on this thread are new eggs/ chicks ourselves, when it comes to hatching. I have read that oxygen deprivation inside the shell is what causes the chick to pip initially. Others on BYC have suggested that opening the incubator to much during lockdown my hinder this process by making to much oxygen available. I am not sure I buy into that... do you think the hen is reducing the oxygen around her eggs by sitting on them enough to have an effect? Good Luck.
