setting eggs tomorrow.... 3-21-12 who wants to join?

SO..... I candled my second batch, batch "B" last night. At 6 days in 2-3 have veining but i couldnt see a baby clearly but left them in, one was clear so it got tossed, and the rest where PERFECT and i could see all the babies!!!. Out of 16 eggs! Im so excited!

Candle day for my "A" batch is thursday, BUT i sneaked a peak at my Blue Cochin..... I saw his/her foot kicking.... I just about died, and almost cried.... I am so excited! I hope all of these babies make it!

We ordered the bigger IncuKit last night and put 2-3 day shipping on it so it should get here with plenty of time to make the DIY bator and have everything perfect for lock down!

I know this wasn't aimed at me, but if you lived anywhere near me, I would totally come over and candle your eggs.

I love candling. I do it way too much. I'm sure that one of these days, I'll end up breaking something, but so far, it hasn't happened. I had the incubator and eggs at my son's preschool the first 10 days of incubation, which made it very easy to not candle. I took them home for spring break (the kids were going to be out of school for a total of 9 days), and of course candled them within an hour.

I just use a small LED flashlight and my hand. Like this:

I can't remember if I told you guys or not, but one of my BCM eggs seemed very far behind the others. So, a couple days ago, I finally determined it to be a quitter, and took it out. Being insatiably curious, I put it in a ziploc bag and cracked it open. Sure enough, it had quit around 7 days along. The others are all doing really well. I think I'll candle one more time as I lock down, but at this point, it's just not as interesting- they take up too much space.

I don't think I candle "too much," but I definitely do it more than I need to. So far I've restrained myself and only candled all of the eggs on the days I predetermined to be "candling day," but I do like to spot check one or two every few days. Especially when I start feeling anxious about not really quite knowing what I'm doing. I use a small LED flashlight and my hand too, so far it's worked ok. My husband is frustrated that he can't seem to get as good a seal on the egg with his big man hands when trying to candle though. DH got home before I got to bed last night and agreed with me that the two I think quit are no longer viable. One we were pretty sure, but not sure enough to crack it and risk killing a live embryo. The other one we cracked into a bowl (although I did do the initial crack inside a ziploc) and like yours it had quit somewhere between day 7 and 10 (I'm guessing 8). We'll be keeping a close eye on the other one and checking for off smells coming from the incubator.
