setting eggs tomorrow.... 3-21-12 who wants to join?

I wanted to post my final hatch results..............

13 hatched as of Thursday.

As of last night, I went to clean out the incubator, crack open the unhatched eggs, see what was inside and throw them all away. As I'm going outside to start cracking them open, I hear "chirp, chirp chirp". It scared the mess out of me. So I find the egg that is chirping and see that there is still an egg trying to hatch (3 days later). So, I help out the little fella. He was VERY dry on his back and shoulders. He looked like the runt of the litter. I cleaned him up, got a paper towel, wet it with warm water, wrapped him up in it and put him back in the incubator. I went to bed hoping that the little fella would make it.

I proceeded to check out the other 10 eggs that did not hatch. Well out of the 10 eggs, 8 of them were not fertile. It was just yolk in them and they didn't even smell rotten. The other 2 eggs had fully developed babies inside of them. So, I don't know what happened. Maybe by me opening up the incubator to get out the first group that hatched, perhaps affected the hatch. :hit

So, this morning I wake up and I hear the littel fella chirping. He was up and walking around in the incubator. He made it!!! He is smaller than the others but he his alive. I will put him in a brooder by himself because I think that he is too small to be with the others. I won't put him with my Maran breeding stock because of his small size. It can roam with the other chickens.

So that is my final result of my 2nd hatch. I still have a lot to learn. I will be setting guinea eggs today.

Well I am officially calling it quits on the batch of eggs started 3-21, None of them hatched not even a pip or chirp. will open one to see what it looks like and then toss them all. At least I told my 6 yr old when we set them that it was a very good possibility that none of them would hatch. So, he was not let down too much. We have another batch setting in another homemade styrofoam incubator and hopefully we will have a couple from that. If not I will not attempt another hatch and will just stick with the hens we have and just buy any new hens already grown. Thanks for all the advice and help.

I hope this next hatch is great for you and your 6 yo. I know hatching gets addictive if you have good results. Im hoping for the best for you.
