setting eggs tonight!! anyone else?

That's good that you have the cocci under control, Layna. Do you have to throw out the eggs until the medicine gets out of their system?

It's the 4 and 5 weeks old chicks that have it, so no, there are no eggs to throw out.
I'm still watching a couple kinda lethargic ones. 1 I'm not sure if he will make it 'til morning. I separated them and upped their dose of Corid. We'll see what happens. That's all I can do at this point.

Update on how it's it's going over here in 'Layna Land! =P A long update.

My older chicks (41/2 - 51/2 weeks old) are clear of cocci with no more casualties! *phew* The 2 I had been watching, and were fairly certain were going to die, are clear and gaining their weight back. They are all doing well.

The 2 week olds got to go outside for the first time Monday.
I think they enjoyed themselves. :)

Maggie is finally understanding they aren't her chew toys. :)

Sooo... guess where I went today?!
I'll give you a hint. ;)

They had "Amauracanas" Whatever that means for this hatchery. to me it just means "I will lay you green and blue eggs." so I like them. They had them ready for sale and in the brooders at about 10 this morning. I got there at around noon and there were 7 left.

I bought them all. :)

Aren't they CUTE! They are so little and they have big puffy cheeks and I held one all the way home and took pics immediately and compared how small they were to the others just for you. *notreally*

It's a little blurry, but have you ever tried to get 4 chicken to hold still for a picture?! (Yeah, you probably have, so you know how it is.)
I couldn't believe how big the older ones had gotten. They used to be that small?! No way!

So there's that.

I got home and cleaned the brooder for the arrival of the newbies, cleaned the coop and separated it in half for the big chicks. I blocked off part of it with a tractor, an old piece of wood, and some scrap wire. (It's not as ugly as it sounds, I promise.) It's makeshift, but it will give the big babies somewhere to roam, so that I won't have to go up there and let the older chickens in to lay their eggs.

My days before the coop separation went something like this; Let out big birdies, shut coop up,let out little birdies, clean the kitchen and wait for the "I need to lay an egg" cry, let in respective crying chicken. go back to cleaning, wait for "I just laid an egg" cry, let out respective crying chicken, repeat 3 times throughout the day, wait til evening, put up chicks and let in big chickens for the night. Now the babies and big girls have their own halves and I don't have to do that anymore. Once my dad builds the dividing wall, mine will come down. But until then, it works. (I hope)

Aaaannndd...

I got my first call about hatching eggs today! You know that coffee shop that I said I'd probably wasted my time putting a flyer in? Yeah, so, I didn't. She called today and said she and her friend were considering going in together and having me hatch eggs for them. :D She's going to call me back after she talks to her friend if they decide to do ti. It's not anything definite yet, but it's a start.

So if you read all that, I commend you. :)

I did read everything and I'm happy about all the good reports for everything.

My "Americanas?, Ameraucanas?, OK...EASTER EGGERS!" are due to hatch in 9 days. I hope they are as cute as your feedstore chicks. I got my Hova Bator in the mail yesterday and moved all 28 eggs into it this morning. It is purring nicely on the table beside me. (the fan makes a quiet whirring sound.) I'll put the 5 EE's back in the still air on lockdown, which is Tuesday.

It's funny because I nearly got in an argument with a lady at church because she was so proud of her "Ameraucana" from the feedstore being show quality and wanted to enter it at the fair. I told her it is most likely just an Easter Egger (which is a mixed breed), since it's from the feed store...But she argued, "No, they said it's an "Ameraucana", blah, blah, blah...Oh well, it doesn't matter, right? The feed store can sell them as "Americanas"...note spelling and most people never know the difference. I am curious how the judges make a distinction when they seperate the breeds for competition.

Your babies are getting big! Is that a RIR (roo)

and a Buff Orpington (pullet)? Maggie is so good with your chickens....just don't turn your back on her too long, or you might hear some squeaks. Is Maggie the same puppy that's in your avatar? My dog thinks the chicks and rabbit are toys and she has accidently killed one of our chickens before. She has to be tied up at all times now.

Congratulations on your prospective hatching job. At least the lady called so that's the first step. Do you only charge for the chicks that hatch...always wondered how that would work?
Well, I need to go prepare supper. We're having chicken...BwaaaHaHa!

Ooh yay! More hatchings! I'm excited for you. :)

I've posted a thread hoping someone can explain in full detail what the heck the difference between EEs, Ameraucanas (Americanas?! *shakes head*) and Araucanas. (To be fair, before I had chickens, I'm pretty sure I spelled it Americanas once.. I was so ashamed. =P) I know there is a difference, and I have a vague idea of what it is, but I wanna know exactly what the big deal is... TSC had them marketed as Ameraucanas. I just hope I get some pretty colored eggs out of the deal. ;)

I think *sad sigh* that it is an RIR roo... That means out of my first hatch, 2 of my own eggs hatched and both are boys. I'm still clinging desperately to the hope that it might be a girl. But that hope is fading drastically more every day. Ok, so on a less dramatic note, the other chick is part BO (dad) and judging by his green legs and whiskery cheeks, part EE. (He has just enough cheek feathers that he looks weird.) The dark chick in the back I think is part BO and part Barred Rock... I know the dad for all of my friends chicks in the second hatch was a BO, and his coloring says Barred Rock to me.

Maggie... She is only good with the chickens under supervision. She wouldn't so much as lick a chicken as long she can see me. But I walked out the other day to see her with the RIR hen pinned, chewing on her wings. I don't think she would ever purposefully kill a chicken. She's never tried to put the chicken in her mouth, just the feathers. She looooovvves fuzzy things. She chews on fuzzy socks, any laundry she can get a hold of. And she looovves to chase things. Chasing fuzzy things... it's totally irresistible to her. =P

I charge per egg, not per hatch. Only because it would suck to turn 50 eggs 3 times a day and get 3 dollars for it. (Not that I think I would have a hatch rate that bad, but anything can happen.)

More snow over night

Anyone that wants some should come take it all!!!! About 4 inches.
Power was out for about 2-3 hours thankfully not any longer. Almost back up to full heat now. Photos from this morning the third day of spring!

Beautiful pictures, Cowchick! But I'm glad it's at your house and not mine.

I won't tell you what our High temperature is today here in California...

Beautiful!

We have (finally) gotten done rain around here, so the temps are considerably cooler. Thank God, because the A/C in our car is out. :\
The coop division is working nicely. :) I haven't had to let in a single chicken to lay, and the big babies haven't yet figured out they can get over the wall.

So we calculated it up and we have 48 chickens now. 0.0 (Wow, was that me? Did I just say that?) Up until 3 years ago we lived in a tiny neighborhood, where you could almost touch the houses on either side of you. We had a fish there. XD

Anyways, I took some pictures of my various chickens today and decided to share them with you. :)

My little Easter Eggers were a little tired. <3

Look how big my 5-6 weeks olds have gotten!
This guy is definitely a rooster, and definitely EE/BO

He's not camera shy, for sure.

Isn't she pretty? *be-a-girl*

My big girls enjoying kefir. :)

Awwwwwwwww, thank you for sharing your adorable babies. I'm so excited, I'll have EE's in less than a week! (Lockdown on Tuesday)
