setting eggs tonight!! anyone else?

I'm sorry to hear about your eggs, Corg. I hope all 15 hatch and become healthy, happy chickens, that lay you 3 eggs a day and never spill their feed or poop in their water! :)

I want one of the babies if this is the case!

Cali, you need to rest! Don't let this experience ruin you on hatching. You are one dedicated chick mama and I commend you!

Thank you!
I spent $30 on these eggs, so I don't have any choice other than trying to stabilize the temps in the 'time capsule' Brower! If they don't hatch it will not be lack of effort on my part. Guess what??? We got the other incubator from my friend....It is a still air Hova Bator. Now I have to read up on this model before I'll feel comfortable transfering the eggs. (So that's atleast one more night of checking
sickbyc.gif
) I'll also need to get a second thermometer/hydgrometer to regulate the Hova Bator. Any tips on using a Hova Bator? It is styrafoam and has 2 windows in it...I've seen alot of people using them on BYC.

The coop is going great! We have a roof now! Pics tomorrow. I didn't get to take many today.
I can't wait to see pictures. I hope your chickens are enjoying it.
I had to toss an egg with a blood ring today, but so far the rest seem to be developing. Wednesday is lock down for three of them!!

Disheartened after candling.

It appears that at this point I only have 6 fertile eggs out of 22!

The 5 green ones were really hard to tell but all appear to have something going on in them. The ONE brown one out of 17 that has veins was easy to see. So, do I leave them in until day 10-11 and recheck/candle again or throw them out now?

Wondering if the high humidity before they were in the incubator might have done them in? At 65% plus. Or if maybe they were slowed down because of this? But then again I was putting the green ones in with the brown ones and the green ones seem fine!!!

Hi Cowchick,
Congrats, at least you definately have some growing. You should leave them in until Day 10, check again and then you'll be able to tell better. -Not from personal experience, but from all I've learned on BYC!!! Of my 16 eggs, I don't see ANY development. But this is only the beginning of Day 4...and they were shipped and the air cells seem detached and very fluid.

Are your eggs from your flock or shipped?

I'm not sure if high humidity to start with would cause the lack of development (after all-some are developing). I think our house had about 65% humidity while the eggs were "resting" IMHO, I think if eggs don't develop, it's because they were weak or they were just plain infertile.

Keep us posted

Well, I think the 'Chicken Angel' was watching over my place last night! We had to take our son to the ER with potential appendecitis at 11pm. $170 later (being told it was most likely a stomach virus) we finally got home at 2am. The incubator had held a reliable HI102/LO100...just where I feel most comfortable. And no setting alarm clocks for me. I was so tired, I woke up at 5:30 and found my trusty old Brower had maintaned a HI-102/LO-100 through the night. What a relief!

I AM TRYING REALLY HARD NOT TO CANDLE AGAIN UNTIL TUESDAY...that will be into Day 5. I wish I could wait longer, because me candling isn't going to make them develop more, but will possibly damage them. That's what I keep telling myself.

Also, when I checked the chicken coop this morning, for the first time I found an egg in each nest box -that is 2 eggs! The girls are finally getting on a schedule I hope. Now if my spazzed out Barred Rock (Rocky) would just get with the program and start laying eggs too!

I best be getting to that laundry! Thanks to my son getting sick

(X6) I have more wash than usual. Have a great day.

How fun. GOOD LUCK! I hope all 3 hatch and become healthy, happy chickens, that lay you 3 eggs a day and never spill their feed or poop in their water! :)

CALI- I hope your son feels better real soon. The hovabator should hold temp good from what I hear.

Sorry to hear about your son. I hope he's doing much better now. :) Stomach bugs suck.
I'm so glad your incubator is doing better! I can't wait to hear/see the results of your candling! (On Tuesday, of course.

Can you send your chickens to teach mine to lay in the nesting boxes? My red lays under a bush, my Barnevelder lays in a compost bin and my leghorn goes between a cardboard box and her nesting box. I have a pullet I'm expecting an egg from any day now, but I have no idea if I'll be able to find it...

It's an Easter egg hunt every day at my house! :p

I've just been looking through threads under "incubating and hatching eggs" and seething with jealousy at all the pictures of baby chicks. I'm getting impatient!

The little peepers can't get here fast enough! They are so cute!

LaynaDon, you are getting closer every hour to your own little fuzzballs. Those pictures were adorable.

The red barn gives me some ideas for a "photo shoot" with my chicks if any hatch.

If you just finished the chicken coop, that's probably why they aren't real good yet about using their nest boxes. Since it's new, you might even consider closing them in for longer in the day...until they get the hint and lay an egg. I also put a golf ball and plastic eggs in ours. I started training my girls before they were even laying eggs. I'd put them in the nesting box and pet them and get them comfortable with it. They were curious on their own too because I would find their feathers in them. I was actually surprised when Buffy (a BO) actually used the nest box for her first egg. Then Rhodie (the RIR) just followed suit. Rocky (my crazy PBR) will probably do her own thing and lay her egg on the poop tray or something!

Our coop isn't finished yet. They are in a tractor at the moment. I'm not worried, they will figure it out. ;)

How are everyone's eggs today? Hey, Cali... It's Tuesday! :D

I'm going to be setting up my brooder very soon. What kind of thermometer should I use? I would really rather not buy a new one but I'm not sure we have a suitable one at the moment. Would a mercury thermometer work? Only other options that I know of are a candy thermometer, a meat thermometer, and a digital person fever checker thermometer. :/

On Day 10 here. Candled this morning, and I think we may have gone from 8 to 7 viable.
We only saw movement in one egg, but maybe they were napping
hu.gif

Is a blood ring something you can see from the outside, or only inside the egg when it's opened?

One egg looks different from both the clear and the others. What do you think?

I dropped one on the way to the closet to candle, but it was not fertile, and had been listed as a dud on Day 6.
