I wish one of mine would hatch me some babies.

('Cause, you know, I don't have enough...)

Just set my first batch of eggs Sat. with a homemade bator. I tried a 40 wt bulb, then 25 wt, then 15 wt to find the right temp. The 40 wt melted my themometer crystal. My cooler is 2 inches thick. I used 8 eggs from my girls. How can anyone complain about turning eggs a few times a day? It's hard to stay away from them.

I just love baby chicks! Have a Barred Rock chick being raised by to 2 Blue Cochins. HE is 8 wks old now and they are still caring for him. Make him sit on the roost barr though instead of the nest. Can't cuddle under their feathers as well.

I know right! I love being in there with my eggies. :) Speaking of... I need to turn them... I had a much better memory for the first batch.

But they are moving and developing correctly (I think) now! Most of them anyway. I'm so excited! My friend came over and she wanted to help me turn the eggs so I wanted to let her see them candled. When I shined the light in there she goes "OMG!!!! LOOK! IT"S A BABY CHICKEN! It's so cute!!"

Makes me wonder what I looked like the first time candled them...

That's funny, Layna.

You're going to have some real flyers and escape artists on your hands!
I don't have to worry about that...My silkies can get a whole 2 inches off the ground flapping their little wings for all their worth!

lol How old are yours now? a week...? and a half...?

Mine are mad at me. They keep flying up on top of the waterer and looking at me like "Yeah, that's right! Whatcha gonna do about this!! Put wire over it?"

So I have 38 (assuming I counted correctly this time, which I probably didn't) eggs in the incubator now. I had to toss a couple today. I opened one that I was ultra, super-duper, extra, absolutely, positively, positive it was dead. It was so cool! (A little sad, but still really cool!) You could see it's beak and wings and toes! It could almost have been a human fetus. (if not for the teeny tiny beak and wings) It has eyeballs and a heart and it was all curled up. It was so neat!

While candling the live ones, a couple of them put their little feet against the shell! They have such little biddy feet! I could see three toes. It was awesome! I love babies.

All babies.

Awww, how exciting that you are working on another hatch. It is truely fascinating to see little lives forming in your care. Thanks for keeping us posted on your new batch of eggs. It's so exciting. I'm hoping that guy calls me back...I found a local chicken breeder who was going to sell me 6 silkie eggs to incubate. But, I never heard back from him. Today I sent him an e-mail and left him a VM.

Yes, my chicks are either 11 days or 12 days old. Two hatched Feb 17 and the other two hatched Feb 18. So, yes they are a week and a half old. Their real feathers are growing in on their wings and feet. Do your chicks sing or just peep? My chicks make so many different bird sounds we often think it's coming from outside...but it's these 4 little chicks. I remember we kept the other silkies in the house for 7 weeks and noticed the same sweet sounds. When we finally moved them outside, my whole family missed their little chirps and trills and peeps.

Take care, Cali

Candled my 24 eggs tonight. Had to cull 2 of them. One Cochin egg was clear through n through. The other was a precious Silkie egg, also clear through n through. That's 3 out of 25 I've had to remove now. Here's hopeing no more need culling.
