setting eggs tonight!! anyone else?

I used the baking soda & vinegar method last night. It was SO hard, but I know it was the right thing to do. I was trying everything, but the chick was not responding and seemed to want to die.
We all had tried to give it vitamins, Sav-a-chick, Poly-vi-sol, even Prednisone in water. It just got weaker and weaker and I decided to put it out of it's suffering. My DH couldn't do it any of the ways we had heard of before. Layna, thank you for mentioning this way.
Jonathan and I cried SO much and my husband joked...I think it was his way of trying to avoid the emotions involved. I feel better today. The other 9 babies are getting so big and fluffy. They are adorable!
Have a good day, Cali

Poor guy. I'm glad you found a way you could handle. I'm sorry you lost one. :( I hate losing babies.

Yay for other healthy babies. :) They are so fun. I miss them.

My grandmother messaged me and told me she might not be giving me Wyandotte eggs after all. -_- Okay, let me explain. She has been keeping that mean rooster forever now. (I'm not sure how much of the story I've told ya'll before.) She wanted to breed them, and was waiting until she could afford an incubator. A few days before I got my incubator I was talking to her and mentioned I would be getting an incubator and told her I would hatch some Wyandottes for her. She was totally on board and seemed to really like the idea. I got the incubator, and we made plans for her to get me the eggs whenever she could. Someone offered me giunea eggs a few days ago and I wanted them so bad!! But I said no, because I thought my incubator was supposed to be full soon. So then my grandmother messages me and says she doesn't know if she can put up with the rooster any longer and she may just give up on breeding them.

It's too late for me to get the guinea eggs now! I told her I had just given up some other eggs because I was planning on having hers and if she could stomach the rooster for a bit longer, I would appreciate it. She hasn't gotten back in touch with me so we'll see what happens. I'm kinda annoyed now. I hope she doesn't eat him and give up on the eggs. I just can't understand why you would keep a mean rooster for months, get the incubator you were waiting for and be totally able to hatch eggs now, and then decide you can't handle him for a few more weeks? *does not compute*

I agree, that doesn't make sense. Hopefully she still has the rooster and can give you some eggs for your bator. Even a dozen or less would be worth the effort!

My BO has been broody for 2 days and nights, which is a first! Last time she was broody, she just stayed on the nest box during part of the day and hopped on the roost with the other girls at night. That's how I ended up having to incubate the Easter Eggers -which are doing great! Anyway, I just bought some fertile eggs at Trader Joes for $2.79-hehe! I'm going to warm them up and then pop them under Buffy as soon as I see her off the nest.

She won't know the difference (I hope) and if she changes her mind again...Oh well, no great loss!

Ooh! Hopefully she'll stay broody this time! I'm so hoping my BO gets the broody gene. What exactly is Trader Joes? I've heard a lot about it but I've never actually looked at it.

Trader Joes is a grocery store that sells health foods or local foods! I know of several in California, but not sure if they have them in other states.

I looked them up and there are a few in TX but not near me. :( Kinda disappointing because I've heard lots of good things about them, but I'll live.

How are everyone's chicks? I introduced the kitten that we are keeping to the chickens today. (He's going to be a mouser, so I want to teach him not the hunt the chickens early.) They are already afraid of him. -_- I keep telling them to get their bluff in early so he won't hunt them, but they don't listen...

My Easter chicks are doing great and the younger half is ready to move out to the barn tomorrow!!! I just saw one on the feeder peaking out over the top, EEEEEEKKKKKK!!! Moving day is TOMORROW! I keep trying to get a picture, but have not been successful yet, of our Red Healer, Marlo, with her front paws up on the table peeking into the little house brooder. My mom says she doesn't want to hurt them, all she has done is look, but wants to herd them.

Awww. :) I miss little babies. My dog doesn't want to eat them or herd them... She wants to lick them. 0.o Weird thing.

guess what?
I have my first ever chick order due Thursday!!

I ordered 2 Gold Barnevelder roosters, 2 Partridge Silkies, and 2 Blue Cochin Pullets from Ideal! I'm so excited!!
And! I shared an order with a friend and my grandmother, but they will both be out of town when the shipment comes in, so I get to babysit their chicks and 4 ducklings!! I'm really excited about the ducklings. I've wanted ducks for awhile but my parents say we aren't ready to take on another species yet... :( I keep trying to convince my dad that they aren't very different from chickens and it wouldn't cost him any extra because they eat the same as chickens, but he's not going for it. Maybe he'll be able to watch them some next weekend. ;)
So, yeah. I'm excited. :)

Sounds like a movie plot: baby sit ducklings, have parent baby sit ducklings, oh darn have to have some of our own ducklings :(
What a great plan :) Why did you order roosters?
I plan on setting one more batch of eggs to hatch this spring and maybe one batch really late in the year or really early next year. I'm trying to coordinate with a friend that has Seramas and would like to try hatching about a doz. eggs and I want to collect from my three show girls and my rooster for a week so I should have 10-16 eggs. I think Seramas are really, really tiny and hatch at 19 days so putting them together could be interesting. Seramas are tiny bantams and mine are very large, standard size fowl.
