Definitely wait on those! Those look like blood islands to me. I would wait until day 10 to toss any of those out and by then you should see bouncing embryos.

I agree! Even when I am fairly certain at day 6 or 7 that something is developing or not developing, I still always wait until day 10 to throw anything out. Just to be safe!

Confessions of a compulsive candler.

Hello my name is Susan and I could not help candling once again today.

woot! I have 6 so far that are showing veins.

Hoping they keep progressing, Some of them have rolling air sacks so I'm not sure what will happen as I've never seen that before, I know it happens from hard shipping, based on my obsessive reading of byc.

#15 is way out ahead of the others with a definite dark form and veins around it. I got a more powerful flashlight today but I think the black cochin eggs are just dark shells and where they aren't porous they are almost impossible to see through. I can't imagine trying to candle a darker egg!
#17 looks good but has rolling airsack.
tiny C1 and C3 are definitely changing but C2 is not.
#12 and #14 have decided to join the race
and on one of my W eggs, W6, I see something change but not sure what it is. The other W's are not really changing. I got them to eat but stuck them in incubator instead.

That's a lot of other eggs that are not changing yet. There are 23 eggs in there, but it is really early. Why is the one going so fast?!

Cheers!

Susan

Well I just took out a ton of the infertile eggs and made a 24 egg omelet (scrambled eggs...but yeah :p) for the chickens and dogs. Still more that aren't developing in there but I'll leave 'em be for now.

Well it's day 7 and out of 22 eggs I see growth in only 13 so far. All 7 of my own chickens eggs look good but, of the 15 shipped eggs, only 6 look promising at the moment. I left all the eggs in there just in case I'm wrong.

Sounds like most of you are seeing some good results! I randomly candled 3 duck and 3 chicken eggs last night; all three duck and at least 2 of the chickens are good, the third chicken was a little darker so I'm not sure. Cannot find my LED light and my old flashlight need new batteries. Will get another light and candle all of them about Tues at 10 days. And woot, looking at a big ol redwood 'bator for sale ;-) Just trying to arrange to go see/pick it up.

Wow Hokankai, you must have a huge incubator! I was just wondering about how long an incubating infertile egg is safe to eat. :)

Nah, it's just a Genesis 1588! I have the eggs in egg trays from the bakery so there's no wasted space. I had 48 eggs in there but could have easily had a couple on the sides haha.

I told my family not to eat the scrambled eggs I made, just in case there was bacterial contamination. I don't think the dogs and chickens will mind though :p

What is a blood island? Does anyone else have any candling pics to share?? I didn't candle them yesterday and I am going to try not to touch them until sunday (10 days!)...

Blood islands are the beginnings of the circulatory system, basically the start of the veining you see. A few days later they'll be veins if those were blood islands!

I'm weighing and candling again today. I'll post some pics!
